Yeah, I never read that stuff.
28 and 22 and your knees are already hurting? I can imagine what you will be like when you are 45 like me.
Hell, I have some sore joints too, but my walking around helps, and it is an easy way to burn calories. Plus, if you are bored, it helps burn time.

Yeah, the military does a number on your knees. Marching, running, standing all day, repeat. Knee problems are REALLY common in the military. Just make sure they note it in your medical record - otherwise they wont do anything for you later down the road when it gets worse and you are getting out. For that matter.. note EVERYTHING in your medical record, no matter how silly you think it might be at the time. I am actually getting let go (involuntarily, but I'm not complaining - I didn't like my job, and now I don't have to worry about being gone all the time) for medical reasons so believe me, I've been going through how important this is for quite a while now.
Good luck!

Well my knee bothered me a tad before I went in...old injury. But in basic we ran some, but at tech school i figured out that i ran 10 miles every week and i was there for 32 weeks. This was running on streets by the way. So that tells you how much I ran and then all that marching and standing for hours at a time. Yea you pretty much covered it. My job is getting better, I was complaining a lot in the past, but if i had a choice to leave or stay I'd leave, cuz I don't really think what I do contributes all that much anyways. Thx for the advice I'll remember that when I leave.

Heh, you military guys that hate how much you get paid and hate your jobs slay me..I ain't saying it's the Taj Mahal or anything, but you get free room and board no ? Free clothing, free medical and all salary you earn you get to use as liguid disposable income ? If I am wrong, please set me straight. I am NOT flaming ANYONE.. Just can't see what makes it such a bad deal. If I could do it, I would have.. I was certified non eligible due to some drunk running me over when I was 17.. not crying about it, just stating a fact. So I guess I have to ask, what makes it so bad ? Can you not get training that you can use in the free world to make a good living while getting paid and have no expenses ?

No flaming from me man, that's a valid issue if that's how you feel. It's all about personal preferrence really, I was more interested in how the people that chose to go felt. I wanted to go, but cannot. Spent three years in AFJ ROTC until that fateful summer. Some guys Love it, make it their entire lives, seems others hate it. Was curious about their feelings on it

Free room in board is living in a jail cell sized room with one or two other people in which you can only have a 6 pack of beer at a time depending on rank. no hard liquor. We have to pay for our uniforms-you get about $200 a year for clothing allowance but that dosent cover it. One set of cammies is around $90. Free medical is a joke. All you get is free motrin. Usually the guys who get hurt get shit on for being hurt anyway. The only thing free is your shots. Those knee pains everyone is talking about never get "fixed". The training is pretty whack. I'm the chief of my section but I'm not a SNCO. Basically that means I'm a surpervisor that gets paid like a clerk. Not to mention we're on call 24-7-365. Now I dont hate the Marine Corps but thats just to show you its not all you guys think it is. It sounds like a sweet deal but its not all roses. I dont regret it but I'm not re-enlisting

My job is freaking easy.
My boss is not a manager in any way.
Guys complain about each other because they really can't complain about the job.

Thanks for the well thought out reply, I apreciate the articulate response and it does shed a bit of light from the other guy's point of view.. I will definately keep that in mind when I hear about service life.
God Bless you and Everyone that serves. Some of us respect and admire our service persons, and I am one of em.

Ok I'll try and put this the right way without bashing us or bragging us up, but I'll tell ya exactly how it is. It's really not peas and carrots!
I'm AF by the way.
I got free glasses and an eye exam which was pretty cool, but when you're 22 how much medical do you really need? Besides dental work, was covered by my company before I came in. My room is 10x15 tops. I got the fridge and the plenty of clothing space, but seriously after you put a bed in there it's a little cramped, but I really don't need that much space. Now I'd be really happy if they gave me 280 a month for food but my commander won't approve it and i work 11pm-7am....kinda hard to make it to the chow hall wouldn't you say. Oh it's on the other side of the base by the way. I joined to go to iraq or somewhere overseas for at least one 6 month deployment, but I don't have to go unless I say I want to go....and guess what i get to do, sort mail. That's just how my unit is set up...our job is here in the states. I really don't contribute to the war or anything like that in my opinion. Sure I fix things on a plane, but honestly anyone can do that and our plane doesn't serve much of a purpose unless a nuclear war came upon us, which is possible. I do enjoy going to our gym...very nice, but the Y at home had everything i needed. Being away from home kinda sucks but i'm only 100 miles away so i have no idea how some of you guys must feel. Well that's about all i have to say about it. Oh you are on call 365 and can be put on 12 hour shifts whenever they feel like it...my cousin will be doing that for months. I gotta work every few weekends till I'm trained and you can never talk to down to someone who outranks you, ever! I really hate that...they are no better than you and this is something i really miss being in the civilian world.

Dude you're in the Air Force...it's pretty much the same as a salary job in the civilian world. I've been on many different AF bases and they don't feel or like like military bases...from all the apartment like "barracks" to chow halls that look like restaurants and have the food to match. You can't talk back to your boss in a civilian job either so you might as well get used to it. Thanks for your service to your country but you do have it a lot better then you think.

it's always funny to hear an Air Force guy talk about "How bad it is"
i've never said that my job "sucked." Nor is it really "hard." it's just boring. Here i'm in Iraq, and i sit behind a desk. for 12hrs a day. every day. doing the same things, every day.
Most of what we do, yeah, we get trained to do. kinda. It's more of a generalization or introduction than anything. Everything else is more on the job type learning.
The thing that sucks though, is that we don't really get the same pay as someone on the civilian side doing the same job. for instance, someone with my job (weather forecaster) at the same skill level would make 42k + holiday and night shift pay. i barely made 28 last year. and there is no holiday pay, or night shift pay. it's you work when you're told to work.
i've been in 8 years. but haven't been doing weather the whole time. I was motor t before that. i was a driver, in the civilian world those guys would make about double or more per month, of what we get.
the hummer mechs at GM i'm sure make a hell of a lot more than our hummer mechs here make.
and while we do volunteer for this, Many do don't volunteer for the back to back 12-15 month deployments to this shit hole. we miss virtually everything at home. Birthdays, 1st day or last day of school, holidays, etc... and there's always a chance of some Arabic fucker trying to shoot us, or blow us up.
We don't volunteer to get picked for duty cause some one couldn't do it that day, and you had plans with the family on your one day a week off.
there's plenty that sucks about the Military, like burning shit. litterally, shit.. or standing Duty to baby sit the jr. Marines. Or the various other crap duties they come up with, that will never be apart of the civilian sector.
Or wearing the same "suit" for two or three days or more straight, because they're too expensive to buy enough to wash and wear, every day.
However, The military does have it's benefits, but so do many civilian jobs that offer medical and dental insurance. the main difference, is we don't have a copay, or a deductible. the Barracks, for the most part, suck. the Corps is starting to build new ones to replace the pre-Vietnam era ones. but when there's three Marines in a room slightly bigger than a walk in closet, that sucks.
You can't have visitors past a certain time. Many bases, the only way to get anywhere, is if you have a car. Generally, the new guys coming in don't have any bills. just the usual cell phone. but when you're making $1000-$1300a month, you can't really afford much.
this list is by no means all inclusive, and it doesn't go for everyone. some services have it better than others, and some jobs in those services also have it worse than others. but please, by no means, try to compare what we do to what you do, and say we're adequately compensated.
since you say you support us, but couldn't serve, do us a favor, and buy a round for the next service member you see in the bar.Last edited by sgt0704; 06-10-2007 at 12:10 AM.
