then just do the honda powered 7k and pay a few hundred bucks to have someone come in and put in a transfer switch and call it a day. The first time the power goes out and you fire that up it'll all be worth it. That's how gen's work. They pay for themselves with one use. When you look around at the pain in the ass your neighbors are going through you'll be glad you got one.
Few years ago the hurricane that hit texas made it up this far and knocked power out all over the state for the most part. Some people were out for 6 days or more. I hooked the gen up and me and the kids were sitting in the recliner watching cartoons and my wife walked in. I looked up, laughed, and said " I wonder what the poor people are doing?" That's a saying my dad used when he was around and I finally understood what he meant.

The transfer switch alone will run you $200.00 - $400.00. With labor it could end up costing 1k with a legit electrician depending on where you mount the switch. Next to the panel is always cheapest.

Installation was pretty simple as the wires are all labeled. You are simply running your home circuit from the breaker to the transfer box and then back to the circuit. Pull the existing wire out of your breaker, splice it to the box wire and then insert the coordinated box wire back in to the breaker.

Yeah, it's not bad just depends on how handy you are and if your comfortable working with electricity. You also need to run a 30amp inlet somewhere outside to plug the generator into.
