Also - the OP is looking to purchase a used vehicle - within the price range he's looking at, it will most likely have over 100,000 miles on it from the get-go. In any event, that's another reason to go with a diesel - they last longer, hence the higher price upfront.
Not big rigs or commercial rigs, but everyday 3/4 ton trucks. At 300K, they are trashed.

And I don;t follow your logic about a person who buys new will only drive the vehicle for 100K but a person who buys a 100K vehicle used is more likely to drive it 200k?

That makes no sense. At 20K miles per you'd have to keep it running for 10 years. How many 25 year old trucks do you see on the road?
