There is generally a tag on the differental with the ratio too. If it's a six speed most likely 3.42. If you bought it off another party the code / tag could be wrong. Another way to check is to put the wheels in the air and count how many times the driveshaft turns with one rotation of the wheel.

3.73 gears are great for an a4 in my opinion..if you wanna feel bettter throttle response try putting some 110 octane in it

I went to 3.73 gears and picked up .2-.3 in the quarter. I did this planning for forced induction. But, didn't see a huge difference in response. I did see some. The thottle body made the car jump nicely though. I agree gears are a must and will give a little better response. I was just shocked how such a cheap and easily done mod like thottle body made a larger difference in my opinion. It didn't give me much in quarter mile times. But, I'd say it improved my passing times by a couple of tenths at least. It's kind of hard to measure those however. I guess I need to get out the G-Tech and test it.

Octane is a measure of resistance to detonation. Higher octane DOES NOT give more power.
It DOES allow you to advance the timing which can give you more power.
110 octane fuel will burn much slower than 87 octane or 93 octane. That is why it could lower performance.
87 octane burns faster than premium, but it will "flash" or pre-ignite in a high compression engine, causing pinging or detonation. Both of which are not friendly to bearings.

would it be better to run high octane fuels like that with nitrous?
-

Exactly. 110 does nothing for your measly 10.5 ish compression ratio. Step up to the big boy CR's and not only will it make power, it will be the only fuel you can run.
There comes a point, pretty early, where adding timing does zero for performance and can only cause problems.
Get it?
