Yesterday was some what eventful. Wife leaves to go to church and comes back to the house within five minutes. She tells me there is something wrong with the car, making noise and grinding sounds after she applied the breaks for a stop. I check and the drivers side rotor has some ugly scratches and looks like a brake pad cracked and is free floating. I run her to church and come back, start removing the tire and get a detailed look. Yep brake pad broke in 2 and and scar the rotor bad.
I pull the passenger side off too to check it and it was not damage but had some wear. So a trip to O'Reilly's for 2 new rotors and break pads. Keep my fingers crossed hoping the caliper was ok. Everything went smooth till I had to remove the OEM rotors off. Seems Mitsubishi puts on 2 machine screws to hold the rotors on the hub. I think no problem I'll just spray some PB blaster to help loosen them up. Wrong. Damn things fused together. What would normally take an hr to complete just turn into 2 1/2 hrs. Those damn screwstook up most of the time. I manage to get 3 of 4 off with a lot of
and brute force. The last one just gave me the
and strips off. I ended up drilling that bitch out. Let's just say those screws somehow found their way into the trash can. Finally get it all back together and went for a test drive. All works well.
I've only seen brake pads crack because either A - POS quality or B caliper's seize up. Old pads looked like they had about 4-6 months left.
Anyone else seen pads break other then how I mention above?
One good thing came out of it - my son now knows how to do this. Made him do all the work except drill out the one screw.gotta teach them when you can!!

Those are the most common reasons I see, Scott.

Always fun when a 20 minute job turns into something like that.

Just left the machine shop. Crank has to be turned. Larry also said he would assemble the bottom end for me within my budget.

Congrats......
I want to do my LQ project but I think I'm just going to let a shop get it to short block for me. I'd hate to make a major mistake on it.

I've come to the conclusion anything LQ/LS based can't and won't be any kind of budget build.
