they are a bit pricey... but by far the best clear sounding strings EVER... the bass is low and deep and the highs are clear... if you get a chance give them a shot!!! i bet you will never use another brand again!!!

I need to try some different strings. I have been playing D'Addario's for like 15 years. I should try some Elixers or some of the coated DR's.

If you are talking about those colored DR strings, don't bother...I bought a red set, and while they looked neat on the guitar, they were expensive, and sounded no better than the Ernie Ball's I usually use. The strings were all different shades of red, and the color chipped off after one session. Ernie Ball all the way for me. Regular Slinkys on my half step and full step down and Skinny Top Heavy Bottom for the Drop D and C guitars...

Think guitar strings are pricey be glad, last time I bought one string it was close to $100. I always suggest don't skimp on strings and that sort of stuff, first part of making your sound is the strings. Usually, I suggest get the best equipment you can because it just makes playing easier (not sure how well that will transfer over from my world to guitar).

No just the regular coated strings. The colored ones flake off like you said.

that is why i tried out the elixers... they went down from $28.00 a pack to $14.00 a pack... my problem is i buy an extra and thicker sring for my 7 string... i also put them on my ovation... what a huge difference especially on my accoustic... night and day difference... and they playability is awesome... the strings last a good while as well... but if i'm doing recording a new set goes on every time...

that, my low sounding friend, is why i don't play anything that needs a bow. your stuff is just ridiculously overpriced!
but seriously, guitar strings need to be changed way more often and are simpler in construction. that's why it's safe to use cheaper stuff. on my classical guitar though, it's a different subject...

It is really just the wood stuff that is so overpriced, but that is because of the rarity. What makes my strings so expensive has more to do with the size. The string I am talking about is over 6 feet long and it is the low E. A set usually cost me about 150-225, and I try to get a new set once a year. Though Pirastro helped me out this year by sending me a sample set of a new string for free. If you like trying new strings it never hurts to ask a company about something that interest you One of my friends is a violin player and his strings are much cheaper (something like 35).

it's not only the size, but also the production numbers. i change the strings about once a month on the guitars i play frequently. i used to go through a set in two weeks, every week in the summer on my classical. but that was when i still went for music as a profession.

    strings:
    for electric I use:

Ernie Ball hybrid steel gauge 9-46 (screw 42 LOL)
dean markley blue steels same gauge

    for accoustic:
    elixers

    For bass:
    GHS boomers

Too stay cheap on strings, back in the day Eddie Van Halen used to boil is strings when they where shot. He claimed it cleaned the string and brought back their tension/intonation.

I tried this, it definitely clean the strings (looked brand new), they sounded good for a little while but its not worth the hassle so i never tried it again!

i can't seem to like them... i've tried them on both my electrics and acoustics... not for me. seem way overpriced. i change strings to frequently to justify the $14 a pack.

i play gigs on a weekly basis almost... sometimes 2-3 sets a week. i change strings every show basically.

    d'addario for me!!!
