Rotaries make great power with a turbo and are very smooth. BUT they arent durable, they generate a lot of heat and need rebuilds at around 60k miles. THey burn a lot of gas, they flood in the winter a lot creating a hard start if you dont shut them down properly. THey are a pain in the ass to own. The 2nd gen rx7's were the most reliable, but not as powerful as the 3rd gens. The shit that kid said about turbos and what not is true, and his comments on how that rotary can make those power figures is true, what he doesnt tell you is that they dont last under that and that they aren't streetable anymore. If they were that easy, you'd seen a ton of them making that power. The guys that race and make that power are tearing motors apart regularly. Rotaries dont handle boost as well as a piston engine without blowing out seals etc.
He's taking advantage of your lack of knowledge of rotaries to make them sound like they are better then they are.
His comments about less power needed to make a lighter car go the same speeds is true though. Lbs/hp is important.

I dont discredit his statements i just think that the way he words them are completely pompous and arrogant making him a total tool and an even larger douche.
Hopefully we can make a few runs and hes big mouth will close and his novels will cease publication.

Yeah, Im pretty sure he's from Chester Springs which explains a whole lot. He's nothing more then a stuck up little prick who thinks he's the shit. I hope i get a chance to race him and completely whoop his ass. BTW i went to DEHS and he's a senior there now. The kids in that school were all fucking annoying just like him. My house is closer to Owen J. Roberts HS but was also right on the edge for DHS.

haha i hear ya, gotta love the boarders of our school districts around here, im a "townie" that grew up a whippet and they sent me to LMS, my mom was PISSED. but i was the last graduating class of DHS, my year put up a huge fight to keep us as one and not split until after we graduated.
our "car click" ruled that fcking parking lot...
*we were still one school at DHS in Lville*

Rotary engines are very reliable handling boost. Blowing a rotary comes from fuel starvation - not an inability to handle boost pressure (there are rotaries running around on the street running 2 -3 bars of boost). Detonation (caused by a lack of adequate fuel) breaks the Apex seals (12,000 lbs of force/Sq inch will break just about anything). Detonation comes from a lack of a professional tune (dumb azz owners through exhausts & intakes and/or mods that lean the A/F out &, "Kaboom").
Rotaries due not need a rebuild every 60k miles....closer to ~ 130 - 140k due to the springs getting tired that push on the Apex seals (you start getting blow by = compression loss = incomplete combustion = power loss & dirty exhaust). I sold my Turbo II with 126k miles on it - the car ran fine (it was likely due for a rebuild though - it was just starting to loose ~ .5 lbs of compression in the front rotor).
Someone said they didn't think rotaries dragged? I beg to differ (as would Abel Ibarra) - they are nasty quick. Here is a 4 rotor (no turbo, no funny gas, just 2 13Bs stuck together....thing gawd dam hauls azz).
Rotaries have an extremely successful racing history (they have less than half the moving parts of a piston motor - there is just "less" to break). Mazda remains the only manufacturer from Japan to win LeMans outright (then the Euro companies banned together & penalized the rotary entries - making them add weight becuase they started getting their azzes kicked). The rotary engine has also more IMSA (GTU & GTO) victories than anyone with 112 wins (Porsche is second with 62).
Guys, I like big displacemnt cars too. I just think it's silly to bash another successful engine design. My 2 cents.

Rotaries can be fun cars my ex had a 89 turbo rx-7 and my current girl wants a rx-8.
That being said i hated that damn rx-7 my ex had god knows how many times that damn thing flooded. If she didnt let it warm up it was pretty much certain it was going to flood during the winter. You had to top the oil off at least once or twice between every 3,000 mile oil change. It was in the shop at least 5 - 6 times a year due to something failing on it. Also it had only 40,000 miles on it, previous owner only drove it on the weekends and only during the summer. The car was fun as hell but it was a pain in the ass to own. Now i dont know how the new rx-8s hold up, one of my buddies had one but totaled it before he hit 30,000 on it so never got to see if it would have issues, but that rx-7 left a bad taste in my mouth about rotary cars.

ok, i did ask him this and heres what he said (hope) you like reading. Newbery medal anyone?
"While generally, yes they arnt reliable, they can be. Their reliability issues have more to do with the way mazda designed certain series. For example, the 12a was built properly, and they can last 200kmiles +. In the 13b's, they originally had a three piece seal which broke pretty easily under boost. However, N/A, they lasted extremely long if the owner took proper care. The majority of the ones I see for sale online have 125k + miles on the original engine. Mine had 121k before it was rebuilt. The 13b-rew however was extremely unreliable from the factory. Those are the ones that would only last 60k miles ish(this number isnt set, its just an average; they could last 200k+ miles if taken care of properly and not pushed too hard). Today the technology has changed and they have a two piece seal that works much better. The problem with that is that you need to fully rebuild the engine in order to replace those seals. Because of this, many newbs screw up assembly making them even more unreliable. The reason you dont see many of them racing is because they were only put in one line of cars, the rx series. This accounts for probably .1% of the cars on the road today. Rotaries for some reason havnt caught on much in the united states. I guess it has a lot to do with how a lot seem to crave the idea of having a v8 instead in the usa. In puerto rico, rotaries are extremely popular, and I believe they have gotten into the 6's with an early rx body. Mazda at this moment is the only car manufacture to produce the engine. I agree, there are very few 1000hp rotaries, but you are talking about 2.6l vs a 5.7 or 6.0. Extremely high hp rotaries arnt very streetable, but neither are high hp ls1s really. It all depends on the port work done. There is the street port, which I have, which is definitely easily streetable. Then there are the more extreme forms of porting, which screw with the power band. Any engine is really capable as long as you do the right stuff to it. It just so happens that the ls1 came with 300hp stock so it was made to handle that hp. You cant really compare a 400hp rotary with a 400hp ls1 in terms of reliability because one is 100hp beyond stock, where as the other is 240hp. As for drag racing in the nhra, from what I have heard, there are certain regulations that make it hard to enter a rotary into the series. Also, a 26b, which is the motor they would likely use is extremely limited and expensive(probably 50k+).
Now dont get me wrong, I love the ls1, and I would rather have it in my car than the rotary. The rotary by todays standars is indeed "inferior" because no one has really taken the time to develop it. The reason I have one is for its uniqueness."
I know tell me about it. That shit was gay. Although after the split the Ice Hockey teams were split and East kicked Wests ass every time! I didnt get my car till a month or so before graduation but my buddies had a new GTO and 97 Formula.
My girl now has an '04 RX-8. She got it used with 54,000 miles and new engine with 4k. Things been running great so far for the few months shes had it. Ill report any problems if the come up though.
