its simple man. If you dont wanna get deployed do not join any service right now. Only reason to join right now would be pride in yoru country and wanting to contribute to this cause or becuase your life is really in the gutter and you need something to straighten yourself out. See i joined 3 weeks before sept 11th happened (talk about getting shafted) and I am going on my second deployment here in the next couple months and it baffles me that there are people that I work with who are about to deply for there first time, AND joined during a time of war and they are desperatly trying every trick to get out of the deployment. It is really rather pathetic. Please dont be one of them.

its nto about not having pride and its not about not wanting to fight for my country, its not wanting to not be able to have any life at all for a year or longer.
i have known of too many ppl who have gotten divorced from being gone so long, or theyre gf's just disappeared on them, too much shit has changed while they were gone..
granted, if she reallly cares, she will wait.... its just the principal of not being able to see loved one(s) or enjoy any luxuries u enjoy while at home, for almost a year...
call me a pussy for not wanting to deal with that, but w.e.
congrats for bein gone 15 months... its something to be proud of, but not something i could do.
maybe it snot a good idea, i dont know. todays my first day of interest so dont flame me for sounding like i dont belong there. im just gaining info.
if theres a way to work for the national guard and not get deployed, unless in emergency (it seems that way now, since we just pulled 30,000 soldiers back out), then id love to do it that way. if im guaranteed to have to go without a life for that long, then its not for me. im just tryin to learn right now. im going to talk to the recruiter in a few days, but im gainin as much info as possible right now

Most of the contractors are paying 90-120 for the year, with the High end for the Second year.
If you know a foreign Language, that will help.
Join the Navy SEABEE's, they learn great construction stuff and never get deployed, and they get huge bonuses every year. Most of the two week deployments go to places like the Phillipine Islands to help remove the old base stuff, to Hawaii to help rebuild Pearl harbor, as well as Key West and Miami.
Plus, they Never Ever go to Iraq, as they are not allowed to.

1 7-month deployment wouldnt be that bad. but to do it multiple times, or go for 15 months would suck

One of his previous deployments was for over a year I believe. Not sure exactly how long. I was out of contact with him for awhile, so I can't remember exactly, but he wanted to become a SEAL (medical drop out of buds, fucked up knee) so I wouldn't be surprised if he was Active duty.

if you are on a ship in the navy you are guaranteed a long deployment for up to a year if i'm not mistaken...war or peacetime doesn't matter as the ships patrol constantly.
air force has the shortest deployment to iraq (5-6 months to a time). they recently updated their basic training to a more similar fashion of the army's basic training, but they work with some of the most high tech equipment out there. not to say that the army, navy, marines, and coast guard don't have high tech equipment.
speaking of which...have you considered the coast guard at all?

Dude, dont listen to anyone thats not in the Guard. Im currently in the Active Duty Air National Guard. I get full benefits and work fulltime. I DONT deploy. None of the 100 some odd people here deploy at all. Our mission is here. There are plenty of jobs like this. You just have to find one. My AIM is mcarse81, my yahoo as well. I work with people that have cross trained from the army, marines, navy, you name it. There is experience from all 4 corners working here. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Im working a midnight shift now but I get off work at 7am Alaskan time. We're 4 hours behind Eastern time. Im usually online for an hour or so before I goto bed.
