they don't check for shit - i love illinois!! Visual must suck!!
yeah, it does for some people. i always seem to see everything perfectly as it was from the factory every time i check mine .
i try to take care of people i know are cool though, but you have to be careful because the state sends in rigged cars that will have something like the egr unplugged and taped off, or a bolt in one of the evap lines plugging it off just so that they know you're actually checking the cars and not passing everything.

from what ive read in PA the testing varies by county too...
some counties they just have to visually check its there... weather its functional or not

kind of that thats ass backwards but whatever works

NY plug no codes.. 38 bucks SEE YA

ofcoarse they're supposed to check the car out but 90% of the shops dont bother....
also a good reason to go to mom/pops type places... alot gets over looked that other places may make a big deal about

in nort carolina the scan your sticker like a barcode. log it into a computer, which tells it every limit is should have(emission, egr acc) and that info goes streight to raleigh. then they plug into you diagnostic port and run and check all the codes. I dont know the inner workings of it. but I know that I used to be able to throw them $20.00 and they would pass anything but now all the info goes to the capital and the sticker gets printed out once it has been approved, they do it on 95 and newr cars. it is a real bitch. my tahoe wont pass because it has a check engine light due to(i think) a bad o2 sensor and nobody will even touch it till i get it fixed. it is a complete nightmare. hope it doesent come to you guys

you're correct about PA. some only have the visual (like where i'm at), but even the other ones with the obdII tests have the visual also. in the visual only counties, you don't have to verify that it works, you only have to verify that everything is present, connected as it was from the factory, and has not been tampered with.

    Smog Talk

At the place I go to get my smog done in Sacramento, the guy that works there is pretty cool. He was actually talking to me about all the different things he has to do.

In California, they actually check under the hood for the factory sticker. Then they go about verifying that everything on the sticker is on the car and operational.

Then, they stick the sniffer on it and the gas cap tester. The car is then moved onto the Dynamometer. The RPMs are increased for a period of time and results recorded.

The results are sent into to DMV by the computer automatically.

It SUCKS to be in California! SMOG CHECK II sucks the big one!!

Also, when I was over there, the guy failed a 79 Honda Civic. It had all the emissions shit off and had an aftermarket carb (more flow??) and air filter. No vacuum lines hooked up no nothing. The car apparently came into CA from Oregon. It had WA plates though. Whatever!

He has to go around looking for all the emissions crap from the junkyards. I don't think he'll find shit for that car. I told him to just sell that thing and get something else. The shitty thing is that he cant even sell it in CA unless he can get it smogged. Here, the seller has to smog the vehicle.

    Sucks to be him!!

What inspections mechanics do you deal with in PA? All the ones I went to check the brakes/suspension and plug their computer in and that's it. I have no EGR, AIR pump, hollowed cats but now SES light and passed. I love how our government tries to be smog nazi's yet doesn't know how to how to do it completely
