It really is worth it especially now that HDTV's aren't that expensive anymore. Yea there are still expensive ones that have all the new tech but my 34" sony widescreen CRT was only like $1100.
Plus the HD channels on cable are growing all the time...all of the local channels and most of the premium channels like HBO have a HD channel now.
1080p...damn dude that's got to look awesome. Are you going to buy a HD-DVD or Bluray player too?

alot of that has to do with whether you go plasma, LCD or something like dlp projection

We have had HDTV for 18 months now, there is nothing like it. Football games are like being there. And the sound! Conan the Barbarian is on some new Hi-Def channel right now, incredible. Have you seen the Claritan clear commercials? That is similar to the difference between reg vs. HDTV. So much more intense, clear and bright.

correct. crt and plasma are the only two that have perfect contrast and color. lcd is just above crt projection. lcos are the best big screens, with dlp just under them in color. big screens also have a more narrow angle of viewing. all things to consider in a big purchase.
oh, and for those that dont know about lcos. Liquid Crystal on Silicone
go crt, or plasma. for a 32" you can get a crt for less than 900 dollars.
once you go hd. you get pissed watching the game with family in standard def!

We have a 34" CRT. Blacks are just that: BLACK. Not dark grey. And yes, it has 180 degree field of view. Looked at projections before I got this one, and I can't stand to always have to be in the sweet spot to see a bright picture.

HD IS NOT a waste of $$$ IT's leaps and bounds better than reg TV. Not even an argument. And as far as the $3000 wasted comment, where are you shopping at? Sony Wega 50 in are going for right at $2k and the 42 are under $2k. Shit I picked up my 61 inch RCA DLP 2 years agao for $2749.....talked them down $1000 but hey that's what haggling is for right?
Gave away my 27 inch tube TV in the bedroom for free to a friend and picked up a 26 inch widescreen LCD for $899 6 months ago

61" rca dlp. my neighbor has a brand new one. i was not impressed at all. i kinda felt bad for him. he was saying it looks like that cuz he doesnt have hd. so i went and grabbed my hd dvr. watched samuel peter vs james tony. heavy weight fight. looked pretty ugly. not worth the price. another friend went and got the polaroid lcd, i think 36". dissapointment is what i saw.
check around before you buy. wouldnt want to be regretful about your choice
