Yep, the Mustangs were just trying to feed off the success of the TA and movie. The cars used in the first movie were actually 76 models with 77 parts. The film was shot well before the 77's came out. I actually think there is a scene in the first movie where the car has honeycombs on it instead of the 77 snowflakes, its real quick. One day I'll take the time to look at it a little closer. One more thing to note, the burnout cars used 455 4spds, which was the last year for the 455 (76).
Now for 77-79 performance numbers, for the time you couldn't beat a W72/WS6 TA. 77 had a 180hp 400, 185hp 403 and 200hp 400 (W72). In 78 and 79 the hp was bumped up to 220 for the high output 400. Combined with the torque they made and you had a pretty decent machine. I think a performance optioned 78 or 79 TA outperformed the Vette those years.
Mustang... was just a wannabe.

Everybody likes to make fun of the HP the late 70s T/a motors put out... Well drop your LS1 to 8.3 to 1 comp .. Take all that new electronic everything off put on a good old Qudra-jet ....then see what kind HP it makes ...

Bandit would have got caugh by Buford T. Justice, After the Snow Man got out of jail he would be hauling manure while on parole. Buford T. Justice would have been presented with a badge of merit, Jr would have gotten that sweet Sally Fields ass. Fred would have returned home safely, while the Mustang II was being smashed by a Big crusher in Texarcana. No Cannon Ball Run, No Strokers Ace. Needless to say it would have sucked!!!
