The problem comes from you and previous owners latching the tops down. What happens is when the pin extends from the t-top, it slides into holes on the A pilar and B pilar. Inside those holes are brackets that are screwed into the frame. Those screws can loosen over time when the t-top is set in place, then latched, b/c the pin pushes against the brackets [maneuvering itself into the bracket's grip, creating friction]. That friction overtime pushes those brackets away from the pins to the point that they aren't holding the t top down any more.

For the time being, masking tape a garbage back to it and/or keep in indoors. Good luck
Wow, is there any way to prevent this from happening?

pull the t-top off, then take the screws out of the cover for the latch. put the top on and latch it. loosten up the latch that the rod from the t-top goes into and slide it up onto the rodalmost as far as it will go, you just need enough space to get the plastic cover to fit into when it's back together. tighten it bacl down and reassemble. I don't really see how it could get so far off though, because the plastic cover actually screws into the front of the latch
