if i recall luos didnt your ex have a matrix? i dont know what they are going for but the wife down here drives an 03 vibe gt (same as matrix xrs). m6 and all. has decent features, we enjoy the comfort, good space and is reliable. ours is at 190k and i take it to the 8100rpm redline almost everytime i drive it. gets 25+mpg in city and 30+ on highway still today. prolly a lil outta your budget but just an idea...
