Thread: Locker in a 9in?

I hated my locker when I was m6. I took it out in favor of a spool. It was fine on the street, other than being noisey.) Biut at the track the car was all over. Felt like it wanted to switch lanes everytime I shifted. Now that I put the 4l80e in I put the locker back in. Hopefully its better with the auto. Shouldn't unlock because there is no unloading during shifting.

One_Bad_TA, I took my pig to the same Moser specialist. I was thoroughly impressed with his wisdom and procedures. He swapped out my richmond 4.11 gears for Motion 4.56's. When I picked it up, He put it back on the bench and retorqued all the bolts and painted the teeth to show me that the mesh was perfect.
When the pig was reinstalled and the car taken for a drive, the noise was totally unbearable. I have the detroit locker with 31-spline axles. I cannot be convinced that the noise is coming from the ring&pinion being not setup properly. I have many theories to explain the cause of the noise, but no proof. At this point I am excluding any possibility of a mal-adjusted ring & pinion setup.
My questions are....
1. Can the housing be off square?
2. Is there a mismatch between the housing and the traction control?
3. The entire chasis was replaced with EMR adjustable after-market parts. Could one or more of those components be out of adjustment?
4. Could one or both axles be warped or bent.
Some of these possibilities could be eliminated by swapping another pig. Or installing my pig in another car that has no issues. But this is a lot of work and effort.
I hope somebody reading this can shed some light in this dark hole

A properly set-up rear end will not make noise. If it does make noise, you either have a) pinion depth is wrong b) backlash is wrong or c) preload is wrong.

I took your advice recently and took my 3rd member to your Moser specialists. I had a bad bearing and jerry-rigged pinion shim replaced. I had my 4.11's swapped out for 4.56's. When I re-installed the 3rd member the noise was unbearable. I took it back to the specialist and found that I had a bad set of gears. Had them exchanged for another set. The whine is still unacceptable but bearly tollerable (if I don't leave the city).
I have the detroit locker and 31-spline axles. The ratcheting effect (felt but not heard) while going around corners is bearly noticeable. And what little there is of it is merely 'bragging rights'. To notice it al all I have to be making a circle of maximum tightness.
My speed shop has my car next week to try to find the origin of that terrible whine. My torque arm is a custom prototype for convertibles which I've had installed with my Moser-9 for 12 years. BTW; the torque arm bolts to the tranny.
I've heard of more Moser-9's being noisy than acceptably quiet.
my take on 4.56's as compared to my 4.11's is that sticky tires is an absolute must. A quick stomp down in 1st gear gets me to red-line almost before I can shift.
