Story sounds like there is something missing. Perhaps its because he drives a Mustang.

I've had buddies who have had tint that was too dark and a trooper has made them remove the tint on the side of the hwy before proceeding.
One of them had to use his car keys.
I'd want to see where the sticker is/was before I made any more judgements. However, it is not the cop's discretion to decide wether the sticker should have come off, a ticket should have been issued and the judge should have interpreted the law.

i agree with this for the most part. i just have 2 points to make:
1) your buddies didn't have to remove the tint on the side of the road. they did it because they knew they were wrong and knew that by removing the tint they saved themselves a ticket/fine/further dealings with the court system
2) it is the judges job to interpret the law but they can't check everything so they rely on the cop's testimony. if the cop testifies that the sticker is an obstruction the judge for the most part will go with that.
i have air fresheners hanging from my rear view mirror. NY law stats that you can't have anything obstructing your view out the windshield. they don't obstruct my view at all but you bet your butt a cop can write me a ticket. i know many people that have had a ticket for it, gone to court and had to pay. it isn't always fair or just but that is how our system works for the most part.

+1 My friend and I were actually pulled over by a cop once for this reason. I believe he was doing it more as a check to see if we drank/other illegal activities(we weren't in the greatest of neighborhoods) from the questions he was asking. The reason he gave us for pulling us over was something hanging off my friends rear view mirror.
We didn't get a ticket.

The laws are there for a reason, if I see him today I'll snap a pick where the sticker was if you can still see where the goo was. As said above it was probably driving the mustang that got him in the first place. Perhaps if he were in his 72 charger with the 440 things would of turned out better.

72 is an ugly year, 68/69/70 he would have been ok. Even a 66 style would have been ok. 72 Charger and that body Mustang is just asking for trouble.
j/k
If I was a cop and someone told me "I set the cruise at 80." and they were in a 65 mph zone I WOULD be a dick to them. If they said "I passed a car and I wanted to get around them quickly." then I would probably let them go with a warning but not cruising at 15mph above the speed limit. Unless its a major highway where everyone is doing it and the cops dont look twice. Not sure if thats the type of highway or not.
I feel for your friend, it sucks all the way around. If he woudlnt have been speeding he wouldnt have that problem though.

Theres something missing from the story as others have said. Theres 3 sides to every story. Both parties, and what really happened. Everyones always quick to bash the cops though...

He knew he was speeding, he knows he deserved the ticket. He was just being upfront with the cop right away hoping the cop would appreciate him being honest. I've been caught going 25 over when I was 17 and I told him straight up I know I was speeding, 25 over, here's my license and registration and proof of insurance. He told me to slow down and go home. So you never know. Depends on the cop.

So wheres the rest of this developing story? FYI just cause your friend had his cruise set to 80 doesn't necessarily mean he was doing 80. Change wheels and/or tire size and your speedo reading is shit. Cop cars on the other hand have to have their speedo's certified. Did he get the ticket for doing 80 or 92?

I don't believe a LEO would make anyone take off a support leo emblem. I know its illegal to have a LEO emblem on your vehicle if you are not law enforcement.
Besides your friend was speeding breaking the law. You and your friend are crying due to the LEO made him take off a LEO emblem. Grow up and stop speeding or get a Camaro.

I have never heard of most of the info in the thread, other than tint regulations. I have no idea what exactly happened, but with a complaint, the dashcam footage should be reviewed by someone connected to the police department. If those cars are supposed to have videocameras that are on during stops. A cop probably cannot be held legally, personally liable if someone is hit by a non-LEO's vehicle during a stop, but I hope that jobs have been lost over that.

OK, being I have lived in florida, and had several cars registered down there, that sounds like complete BS. If that cop had such a hard on for a decal "that supports the police", and he looks the other way when a ricer drives past, or parks next to him with DOUBLE window tint, I mean c'mon. ALL my vehicles down there had window tint **darker than allowed**, and back window stickers, AND my old lowrider truck club. I NEVER had a cop stop me except if I was speeding, and NEVER had him/her question ANY decal/logo on my vehicles. Sounds like your friend could have been possibly being a DI&K to the cop.

I cop becomes liable if he tells the individual to get out of the car and the situation doesn't mandate for it. This is of course if this story is straight. I find very hard that a judge will support a cop if someone gets hit or killed by a passing vehicle because he wanted that sticker/tint removed on scene. We are talking about life safety here...

Story doesn't sound too out of the ordinary, I've seen cops do worse. Most cops I have come across are for the most part reasonable people. But there are also those that are very unreasonable. I drove around for 8 years with no front plate and never had any problems, hundreds of cops saw it and didn't care. Last year I passed one that didn't like it and pulled me over for it. Not saying what I got pulled over for is unreasonable but there is alway that cop out there that has a hard on for something.

I'm not saying is that is not a policy. But if something happens they become liable for it. Lawyers will find a way around it. I can tell you that FHP doesn't do that unless is really necessary. I actually work on the field (to be clear I'm not a cop)and I get to see lots of them and I never seen them get someone out of a vehicle in a busy highway. If it is a policy is his department then you can blame him, i mean he has to follow them but if is not a policy that is a huge risk he/she is taking.
