thats the old school way of thinkn. On ls engines the oil pan is actuly a stuctural support for the entire block. Also ur engine isnt gonna crush itself under its own weight. Lifting it with the entire cars weight on the other hand will crush or crack it. just to be clear here i didnt say this is the only way, its just earier and quicker. U can use a underhood hoist if u like. Its up to u. Its just earier to us some kind of lifting devise under the engine. And look at my pics if u have doubts. Thats a 98 ls1 being supported by a trans jack and a block of wood. It might have been on it 3 hours of the entire 5 hours of the install. Mind u it still had the tranny itself assisting it too so not the entire weight was on it anyway.

2001 3.8 Black - sold- 2000 SS Black M6
thats why i didnt on my V6, cuz its a stamped pan, but the LS1 pan seems pretty hefty, and using a large block of wood will distribute the weight out

you can put a piece of wood that goes from side to side between the oil pan and jack. When you start to get in trouble is when you try to lift the whole car by it. If you are lifting or holding the weight of the motor ONLY then you are good.

I got mine last week, just summoning up the courage to do it and some new kooks headers.

youll have tons of room once your done with those lol Id do the Kmember first and then the headers, but you might be able to get away with it if you have an above engine support hoist. You should be fine installing the kmemeber and then the headers should slip right in.
