No one should have a performance vehicle for their first car PERIOD. That's like giving a kid a rocket launcher instead of a BB gun for their first firearm and trusting them not to take down a building on accident. You wanna give a first time driver something that limits the possibility of them taking others down with them/causing massive damage during a crash. Not something that's capable of hitting oncoming cars on the highway at 150mph+.
A good example: a friend of mine got a C6 vette for his first ride@17, not 2 weeks after getting it he totaled it by taking a turn at an intersection way too fast/late hitting two cars and traffic light post.
I honestly don't understand how parents like that sleep at night knowing their 16yr old kid is gonna be leaving for school tomorrow morning in the rain with 300hp+ on their right foot.

I had a Cav- it was totaled sitting out front of my house. Couldn't park it in the driveway because it leaked worse than the Exxon Valdez, so it was parked at the curb. Woman was driving down the street, looked over her shoulder at my neighbor's house that was for sale, and ran her full size truck into the back of my Cav at 40 mph. Pushed it about 20 feet- only stopping when it ran to hit a light pole. I've never been more sad than to see that POS being towed away.

First time I've seen Cavalier and High Speed used in the same sentence
As a parent, I'll admit it's hard not to spoil your kids. But I won't buy them a high horsepower car.
We gave our boys their first bicycles and of course they were trashed in a couple of years of being left outside and such.
When they needed a new bike, I made them pay half (this is when they were 8 and 11) before I would get them one. Amazingly, they took great care of those bikes, especially after a few reminders that the next one was completely on their dime.
Funny how people take better care of something they had to work for.

For those of you who keep insisting that our reservations are based on jealousy, let me point out that auto accidents are the number one cause of DEATH in teens years after year. Knowing this, why would you want to increase those odds by putting your child behind the wheel of a vehicle like this, especially without making him work for it at all? It's pretty much only going to increase the kid's desire to drive fast and feel invincible...
Now you may be the parent who has raised his kid right, but I'm talking in general here.
