Yes the 400 and 4L80 share some things. The only real difference in the 4L80 is the overdrive gear.

They both still have the same gear ratios (2.48, 1.48, and 1.00) With a .75 added to the 4L80.

I'm not that big of a fan of overdrives, guess I just never jumped onto that bandwagon.
I'd say, if you are going to drive the car that much on the street and it really necessitates an overdrive, then just stick with the original 4L60 and save yourself all the swap headaches. Because at that point it sounds as if going to the track would be minimal and just for fun anyway.

For a drag car looking for optimal ET's that is still registered, but sees very little street use, maybe just a weekend cruise night or something,,,,scrap the overdrive all together. It's just not needed.

Bonneville v8 GXP. The 4l65e-hd is a weak unit as well.

The "MH1" 4T80-E is able to handle vehicles up to 8000 lb (3629 kg) GVWR. The final drive ratio is 3.11:1, 3.48:1, or 3.71:1. The 4T80 uses a viscous torque converter clutch, which was replaced with EC3 (electronically-controlled converter clutch) in 2005.

The 4T80-E is a hydramatic transmission and was developed for use with V8 front-wheel-drive cars, specifically for the Cadillac Northstar engine. It was designed with extreme power handling capabilities at the time. The 4T80-E first debuted in the Cadillac Allante in 1993 along with the Northstar Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) V8. It reportedly cost 80% more than a similar GM 4T60 transmission and weighed 60 lb (27 kg) more.

This transaxle has been used in many of GM's front drive large sedans. The Cadillac Division had exclusive usage of the 4T80-E until the 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora debuted. The Aurora had the 4.0L version of the Northstar V8 coupled to a 4T80-E. It wasn't until 2005 that Pontiac got usage of this transaxle in the Bonneville GXP which employed a 275 horsepower version of the Northstar 4.6L V8.

The 4T80-E is still in use today, on the Cadillac DTS and the Buick Lucerne (when equipped with the 4.6L Northstar).

The 4T80E is a series of automatic transmissions from General Motors. Designed for transverse engine configurations, the series includes 4 forward gears. The 4Txx family is an evolution of the original Turbo-Hydramatic 125 transverse automatic introduced in the 1980 model year "X" body.

The Twin Dual Cam (TDC) 60* v6 is the first cousin to the North Star v8s and their trannies..

The 4T80 is built at Willow Run Transmission in Ypsilanti, Michigan

I can tell you one more thing about the 4T80e, its really heavy and awkward to lift onto a bench or trans jack. If you don't have 3 people to do it, you're asking for trouble.

F-body Rear ends are pretty good. i am running 480hp and its ok. Gm rated the rear axle at 600hp And i have seen it hold up to it. Just get your self some 373s gears and beef up the trans and you'll be fine.

    Ok two things.....

    1. We are talking about transmissions not rear end assmblys

    2. A gm 7.5 oem 10 bolt has a hard time handling stock power...let alone 480 or 600

Fbody reareands are the weakest point of the drivetrain. Most LS1s with a manual tranny can't handle stock power. Put some sticky tires on the aforementioned situation, and that rearend is on life support.

Fbodies with auto trannies aren't as hard on the stock 10 bolt, but make no mistake, the 10 bolt is the weakest part of the 4th gen fbodies and should be one of the first things addressed if you are into much drag racing.
