i tried it without the resistor too guys...sorry lol.
i read the voltage across the front of the gauges while they were in the car...it was like 11.9v

Same would apply bro. The resistor is most likely built into the board rather than the stock LED. Which means if you add a resisted LED there's a severe voltage drop equaling no illumination.. And if you added another resistor to that there would be nearly 0 voltage presant on the output (-) side of the LED = no lighty uppie..
