RIP.
As a FireFighter/First Responder.... You (the public) would be outraged if you knew the jackassery that goes on in most 911 systems....

even with the use of jackstands I still quadruple look at what im doing in regards to the stands placement the jack placement etc and even after that, i'm still scared. Im only really comfortable when im using a lift. I never use a jack and stands alone either. Whenever you jack up a car and you put it on stands, also keep some tension from the jack itself as well, jackstands arent 100 percent foolproof!

i always jack it up...block the rear tires...put the jackstands under...and then before i slide my ass under there i always give a couple good hard pushes on each fender just to be sure that it's secure.

Although it’s sad this would be a completely avoidable accident. If you will be under something heavy make sure it is properly supported and safety precautions are in place…period! This clearly falls under the “thinning of the herd” rule, the man was too stupid to continue living.

screw jackstands, they fail too....many cars have slid off well placed jackstands even with wheels chucks.
if your going to work on your cars, spend $1800 on a two or four post lift. Even Costco sell them!!!
Lifts, save time, money and even your life.
complete BS about 911, saying "call back if you hear more screams" I question why the neighbor did not go to inspect the situation.

Agreed about the neighbor too.
Lazy ass was probably watching TV when he heard him scream.
I would of ran out with my phone. Checked it out, then called 911 if possible.
WTF would that idiot just call them having heard screams, have the dispatcher say call back if you hear more screams then go oh ok.... derp derp derp.
Stupid part on the 911 dispatch and the neighbor IMO.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
I've been doing this since I had Autoshop in HS back in the day. People thought I was nuts but I rather be crazy than dead.
Anecdote: Back in the 80's it actually paid off. I had the car up in the air on 4 jack stands, bumped it from the side and one of the stands (metal tube type - I had 2 of these in the back and 2 of the cast iron type in the front) decides to partially collapse. I no longer use the tube type jack stand.

Friend of mines dad was killed when car fell on him. He wasn't found until late in the night when she came home and found him. Sad stuff especially when it's easily avoidable.

everyone cuts corners I think and it's not that hard to have an accident like this happen to you. I like to think I'm safer than most people when it comes to working on my cars....I'll spend a good chunk of time just getting the car up on stands and making sure that they're solid. I'll also put 2 jacks in the center of the car front and back in case something happens.....hoping that the jacks will at least slow the car down to give me time to get out of there but the reality is I'm not ALWAYS 100% safe with the cars and it only takes that 1 time to get you.

This is a terrible story.
I for one, keep my landline just because I know that my address is going to show up with a 911 call. I just feel more secure about it.
Another reason, I was in a small town and saw some power lines down by some apartments. I knew there were kids around there. So I stopped my truck and dialed 911 from my cell phone. I ended up getting the dispatcher in the county next to ours, they had to transfer me to the correct county, I had to explain everything to them again and then they dispatched the volunteer fire dept, until the electric company got there.
Two thing came to my mind. One, it was nice to have a cell phone to call 911. Two, I had to explain myself to two different dispatchers in two different counties..not very good in a life or death situation.
I know at my house I dial 911, it goes to our local police and my address shows up..
I am not saying it would have helped this situation, but there were some other posts that had simular situations as I ran into.
