Impulse Blurr- 2004 GTO
You are right. I stand corrected. I had a nomenclature faux pas. Totally unrestricted does does not fly from stop light to stop light. And yes I am comparing it to mostly stock but I don't plan on exceeding 425 CS HP. I edited my initial post from back to delta. Everybody happy now?
I'm only a modified monkey.

Any catback with an electric cutout in the I pipe is what I recommend.

I just installed a couple of dynatech splitflow mufflers dumped before the axle and had these observations:
1) Power picked up significantly across the rpm range, and especially pulled hard above 5000 rpm.
2) It wasn't as loud as I thought it would be, but definitely louder than the Borla 3" catback that I had.
3) The exhaust note was much sexier, definitely could hear the cam.
4) Lost a significant amount of ground clearance and looking into alternatives to gain my ground clearance back (such as mounting the mufflers where the catback is/was).
It 'feels' like I gained 30 hp or so, 20 at least. I'm going to the track this weekend and already have a good baseline to compare to, so we'll see.
I was one of those that didn't think much could be gained hp wise by going to the duals, but I was wrong. Maybe its my imagination, but it sure put a smile on my face when I drove it last weekend. Track numbers will tell the tale though. Will report back...
edit-Keep in mind my setup is a 408 that runs low 11's (probably high 10's now). Smaller engines probably won't gain as much from a dual setup.Last edited by 408WS6; 08-19-2009 at 08:27 PM.

I'm certain there is alot to be gained with duals. I'm just not willing to do it for the simple ground clearance issues that you mentioned. The floor pans in these cars are just too low to tuck mufflers up there. And speed bumps are on steriods out here in AZ.
Would be best as you mentioned to custom bend a setup and mount the mufflers on either side of the gas tank in the very back. I'd have to find someone in town with a $30K mandrel bender before I would be happy though. And that cost more money. I'll never do a crush bend system again.
But then again after going through all that time and trouble you may as well spend the dough on a Bassani dual setup and be done with it. All stainless and all mandrel bent with crossover etc...
Just my take on it.

I hear ya. This car has kinda turned into a street legal drag car that doesn't get driven much except the track, so I'm leaving the duals on for now, but if I drove this car everyday, the catback would definitely go back on, even at the thought of leaving 30 hp on the table. It's just not worth bottoming out all the time in my opinion.

I REALLY need to run my car a few times with the exhaust open and with it capped. See how much of a difference at the strip it makes.

Ran a 11.04 @ 122 mph @ 2800' DA.
Best with the y-pipe/cutout was 11.11 @ 123 mph @ 2100' DA.
I imagine at least half those gains were from the cats being gone. Not as much as I thought, but roughly 10 hp for the cats and probably another 10 hp for the duals over the y-pipe. Not a monster of a gain, but a gain nonetheless....
