The one on the left is a modified SAIGA .223 and on the right is a modified SAIGA 7.62X39.
Yeah the M1 Garand is an excellent SHTF piece...lots of really good ones mixed in with garbage floating around....prices all over the board....$300's up to over a $1000....so be careful of the junk....but I have seen excellent Garands go for $350-$400 lately.....

And for the record...from a tactical perspective...the modified .223 you see in the closet has 4 30 round mags loaded with NATO M855....
Seriously that M855 round punches through a 1/2" steel plate from 75 yards....3 rounds before I empty I always put a tracer round in so I know when it's time to change a mag....

Well depends on what the purpose is....the .223 is a flatter shooting round.........the 7.69X32 is a larger round (of course) and has more ass....so for 150 yards and in....that is the weapon of choice.....the .223 sucks ass in the bush/grass/trees as it is of course a small bullet and is easily redirected....the 7.62 goes through brick walls....and doesn't "wound" it kills....but...the .223 is a fine round....I couldn't make up my mind so I built both calibers
My 7.62 is my first grab weapon.....one bright ass light on there and the quick acquisition red dot works well in pitch dark with that LED light on....
Cost? Firstly let me say these SAIGA's are AK's built on the same chassis at the same plant in Russia by the same people on the same assembly line as the AK's...so they are easily modified back to a full blown semi-auto AK.... Either one for under $400 bucks from PeachState Guns....
http://shop.peachstateguns.com/categ...categoryId=130
Adjustable Stock/Scope Mounts w/2 rails and Pistol Grips...30 round mags....from Gilberts...

So for around $650 bucks you can have a brand new very bad boy
