Yeah, you can do a lot with laptops..

You can even hook it up to a docking station, which makes it almost like a desktop. You will have external mouse/keyboard/speakers/monitor.

Yeah exactly. So it goes back to my original question - What are you going to use it for?

Yeah either would be fine.. Just depends on the specs of the machine. If you're looking for something to watch movies on, I would also look into spending some extra money and get a real nice monitor.

I don't know if my 2 cents matters, but I have had my lap top for over 3 years now. I take it everywhere, it is so much more conveint than a PC. I bought some nicer speakers for it. (those don't travel as well). I paid $1300- (with a 3 yr warranty)for it new and just recently we bought one for my husand for $480- (with a 2 yr warranty) and his is 3 x's better than mine. The price has really came down.

Most newer laptops use ddr2 which is pretty cheap. My wifes laptop use ddr which is a little more expensive. Just dont buy it from a retail store you can find it cheaper online. For less than a grand you can have a great laptop. Something with like a 250gb hard drive, web cam,dvd burner, the typical and probably even upgrade from 2-3 gb ram to 4gb of ram.

Just saw your price range. Something like this with upgraded memory would be good.
Although only upgrade to 2gb ram.

Check these out.. Look at the third one in the list, it's only $568.

Has a dual-core processor, 2 gigs of 533MHZ ram, 120GB HD, 256MB radeon video card (integrated), and a 15.4" LCD screen... Not a bad system for the price..

The more you spend, the better the system.. Obviously.
