Red Fire- 2007 Mustang GT/CS
+1
I did 3.73s Stock rear end, no girdle, small stall (3k) and some bolt ons and a small cam (nothing super aggressive, but I wanted a different power band) and OH YEAH baby... It's like a whole new car..Suprised the hell out of a couple Vettes near my shop hehehehe (course that goes both ways..One vette left me so hard I thought I stalled) Get a decent gear if you do it. I had mine professionally installed and they whine just a tiny bit at about 60.. goes away at 68+ Nothing at all above that and the car comes out of the hole like a pissed Gorilla now. And as a nice benefit it runs at a sweet tone rolling down the highway (exhaust note)

+1 going 60mph cruising on the highway 3:23 vs 3:73, I noticed I picked up 200rpm
which sounds more reved up/aggressive...

The only thing it traction will be an issue. Or lack of! The gears are great but it's getting the power and torque to the ground that will be hard. Tires and some suspension mods will help with that but then it's only time before your purchasing a new rear. Good luck with the new found fun.

when did anything come up about knowing what parts go with a rear end, no shit that they're directly connected. and you ask me why should he waste the money on gears on one post then you say go ahead???? you're obviously one of the non-genius types that doesn't understand he's asking opinions about 3.73 gears not moser 12's and entire replacement rear end options. a whole rear once-again is gonna run him easily 3 times the price of the gears. put the bitches in and smash the rear, if you know how to come out of the hole though that stock rear can take a lot. and of course anyone who smashes the shit outta the pedal every single time it's bound to break. and i've seen and personally know several with stock rears pushing anywhere from 400 and up, they must fall in the genius category with me! i've seen your car it looks beautiful and i'm sure you've put a lot of money into it, but not everyone can drop $2 or $3k at a time. but don't tell me i'm a "genius" for giving an opinion you're somewhat against at one point then agree in a different one. hypocracy of democracy! it's all in fun in the end though, so if you take offense, fire back! and i actually am a GENIUS!

10 bolt is weak. don't be too proud of it. I'd rather change the whole rearend set which includes the stronger bolt and gears than do it cheap on the weak 10 bolt. my 2 cents...

I dont know, I would rather save up the 1800 for the moser then pay 700 for install and the gears to go in.

What about 3.90 gears in a stock 10 bolt, i am also going to change out the cover to a T/A cover and redo the shims, gasket, etc etc. Is that too much to go to a 3.90 gear from a 3.23? It is my daily driver but i hardly ever drive highway I drive it on weekends and about 5 miles everyday to work and back. Please someone help me on this issue. It is truly a huge step to get new gears and if i am unhappy with them i will have to pay again to get them changed again!

to be honest 3.73 is what I hear everybody A4 going, and 4.11 for M6... I want to say 3.90 may be too thin of gears... my 2 cents.

if you were to race an identical car, same power, driver skills etc... the 3.73 gears vs 3.23 gears would win by several car lengths 40-90 roll. you gain susbstantial acceleration.

awesome!!!! 3.73 it is then........one more question totally off the subject........i have a 2000 trans am without the ls6 intake i am thinking of buying one that was previously from a 2002 ss........will i gain horsepower from this upgrade? and will i notice a difference? and is this mod worth doing? thanks for all the help djvaly

ls6 intake manifold is a good mod... about 8-10rwhp gain. if you plan on doing heads/cam mods, I'd go with Fast LSx 90 intake and the 90mm throttle body combo. 900 bucks, cheaper off of ebay but you can nail 20-25rwhp. the heads/cam would benefit from Fast90/90 combo not to say LS6 intake is no good but it all depends if you wanna spend the extra $$ for maximizing gains.
you need a dyno tune to go with any of those mods too...

Blue- 2002 Z28 Camaro M6
Actually as I understand it they do not get thinner as the gear ratio gets lower (higher number). The number of teeth does change though which makes the gear weaker compared to a higher gear (lower number) However, higher number gear should hold up better since it takes less torque to move the gear creating less shear on the parts. This is the same reason why cars with drag radials will break trannys and rear ends as compared to street tires which will spin allows the torque's energy to basically evaporate. This all depends on alot of things though including tire height etc, in general with our cars though I would almost always say a 4.10 is less likely to break then something like a 2.73.
To answer the question though yes you will notice a difference with the gears and it will be substantial.
As for the intake I understand there is a substantial gain with the LS6 intake, you will have to decide if it is a good dollar per HP gain.Last edited by Bottesini; 09-14-2007 at 11:20 PM.

there is less metal as the gear ratio is higher which means thinner. lower ratio gears are more robust and hold better. I think we are talking about the same thing...
"However, higher number gear should hold up better since it takes less torque to move the gear creating less shear on the parts."
not really, when you have the driveshaft hitting that 3.73 at launches at the track, it hits it harder than if you were on 3.23... trust me, that's how I broke the 3.73 in a few months at the strip. before on 3.23 it was good. you're presenting theory I am presenting actually what I experienced with my setup.Last edited by djvaly; 09-14-2007 at 11:38 PM.
