They only good thing that I could possible think of looking at this picture is, it looks like the lift was faulty. I see the ride side arms in the air, but the left side is out of view. Maybe the lift manufacture will cover the cost of the car repairs? Sad sad sad day for that car owner.

It's hard to say. But, it looks like it may be a low-cost cheap cheap China POS lift.
FYI:
==========
Testing And Complete Failure of a 10,000 lb. Two Post Car Lift
gregsmithequipment
Quality, Affordable Car Lifts & Automotive Equipment - Greg Smith Equipment has warned customers for many years that certain competitors car lifts are over rated. Watch this video to better understand what happens to a poorly made and over rated two post above ground lift. The complete testing (and ultimate failure) of this hydraulic lift is captured on film.
==========
There are other articles, videos, reports, etc that show cheap car lifts having more metal flex than any proper lift should have with even just a 3,000lb load.
Imho, it sucks. But, there is very little an individual can do since the lift was not installed/checked/certified by a licensed company. The warranties on these BS products are carefully worded to protect the scum company from be at fault. Heck, if the company put "this lift is for SHOW only and should never be used and it should be in an area kept free from people" people would still buy the lift, not realizing what a POS it is.
Great example - Windows10:
