LT question
Can anyone tell me why their is such a big variation in pricing from one long tube header to another. I noticed the SLP is almost a grand while the pacesetter w/ ceramic coating is like $360. Is there really that big of a difference? I'd like to save money for sure but not at the expense of getting crappy quality.

SLP's are the worst for ground clearance.
As far as the $ differential, that's usually because of the material used. The more expensive Kooks, QTP's, Dynatechs, etc...are made out of stainless steel, while the cheaper Pacesetters and Hookers are not, but are usually ceramic coated, depending on which set you opt for.
The stainless will outlive the car, while the cermaic coated ones will eventually rust. Whatever you do, just don't get the painted ones, because they are junk as far as longevity. Just pop for the cermanic coated if you don't want to pay the extra for the stainless.

Thanks for the response. Any idea how long the ceramic coating generally lasts?
Vote for Pedro.

I personally hate the coatings. There is nothing you can do to make them last longer,,,aside from keeping the car in a climate controlled garage and never driving it,,,even then it's iffy.
I have had coated headers on my chevelle for about 15-20 years, and every 2-3 years they have to come back off and sent out to be recoated. They start pitting after 2-3 years and look like crap, and another coating is $200 everytime. This is a fair weather only car that is in a climate controlled garage too....What sucks is this stuff is so tough you can't simply sand it and paint over it,,,so once it's coated it's done.
There is not a coating out there that will stay on the headers without issues,,,but at least the paint can be redone cheaply enough.
Anymore on my other cars I just go for the painted headers. Never use them with the paint that comes on the headers. I always sand them down and use a good quality paint. And generally get 3-4 years out of the headers before they need to be removed and painted again. Much cheaper than coating every 3 years.
Painted headers will last if you buy a good quality set of headers. My father was getting more than 10 years out of a set on a car he drove through the snow and salt and sat outside, never garaged. Eventually the collector area would get some pinholes and start leaking,,,He would just install another set of painted headers and go another 10 years. Still owns the same car today.
It's up to you and what you do with the car.

you can always go for the XS stainless headers. they're a pretty good bargain, alot of people have them and like them pretty well.

about the coatings...you can always paint the headers with high temp engine paint and it will be just as good. sand them a bit first if they are rusted and go at it. you can put a few coats on and theyll be fine.
prices are subject to the coating, but in all honest, you may as well go ceramic and paint them and/or wrap them. why not? alot cheaper than stainless.
but stainless is awesome.

Yeah I had thought about wrapping them too. Any drawbacks to that? Would that possibly help to preserve the ceramic coating at all?

All the painted ones I've heard of don't last very long. The paint flakes off in the first few weeks and then rust not soon after. I'd either go stainless or ceramic coated...painted is not an option for me.

yup, black2002ws6 on ls1tech.com sells them. they just ended their sale this week. it was $550 shipped for the stainless LTs and the 3" stainless Y pipe. they are usually $600 shipped for the set. he gives a pretty damn good military discount too. i got the whole set with the sale and discount for $500 shipped. that's pretty hard to beat if you ask me. oh, he said he might have the sale again around christmas if you're not in a hurry.

Does the stainless give any additional cooling like the ceramic coating does or are they more expensive simply because they last forever?

I just got my Stainless Steel American Racing Headers yesterday after a month of waiting. They look pretty good, and since they are not going on for awhile I was thinking of getting them ceramic coated. The store I bought them from said that it wasnt needed, which is understandable but since I am trying to keep it cooler under the hood would it be a good idea to coat them, and if I did how much of a differnece in tempature would it make?
