dashboard resets constantly
quite often when i start my car the needles on the tach and speedo jump up to max and then go back to zero and then go to their respective place in the rpm range. this is before i put the car in gear or anything. also my trip odometer (not the regular odometer) resets to zero.
so what is causing my car to do this and how can i fix it?

This happoned to my car over the winter, i thought that the battery got too cold....becase it only happoned when it got really cold at night.
I asked what caused it on here and i was told that i might be a loose wire behind the gages, it has not happoned again for me but it might work for you... ^_^

A TSB exists for this issue, the cluster needs to be replaced.

Yeah there's a TSB for trip odo resetting on the '99 cars, doesn't mention the gauge sweep but usually happens at the same time when trying to start the car. http://home.earthlink.net/~cetera/pics/aug99tsb.jpg

No, it was just a technical service bulletin - not a recall or anything. Might be able to if you have some sort of extended warranty on the car? Only happens with low voltage, so a good battery makes it "go away."

YUP!! i have had the odometer trip resetting all the time and needle sweeps since i bought my car, and today it wouldnt start, got it jumped and went to auto parts store and got it tested, the battery was bad, put a new one in and it works fine!!
BTW, it was the original 8 year old AC Delco battery, it last long enough i think?

Wow, 8 years on the stock delco - must be a record, my buddy had TWO different ones puke acid through the positive terminal in 5 years total.

Hasn't the news spread over here during the years? The reason the stock Delcos start leaking around the positive terminal is that the + terminal bolt is a hair too long or in other words the threaded hole isn't deep enough. When fully tightened the terminal bolt presses against the end of the hole and surprise - a slow leak of acid.
I tend to avoid Delco batteries for this reason, the generics from the auto parts stores work just as well.

hmmmm...i'll have to see what my batt looks like. i usually get my batteries from wal-mart with lifetime warranties on them. when they go bad i just go get a new one.

so wait a second...
the tsb gets you a new dash cluster...correct? so then i'm assuming that since they knew of this problem in 1999 that the 2000+ cars have updated clusters. if one picked up one of those clusters and tossed it in there would there be any problem? and would the milage still be correct? i'm used to having a rotary style odometer not a digital.
