There's a couple reasons. Without paying a lot of money you can get a true dual that'll go all the way to the back of the car so it get's to loud when driving down the highway since it exit's right behind you.
But mostly because you lose to much ground clearance with it.
Personally I like the sound of my GMMG better than my true duals with chambered mufflers but sound is subjective so other's will like the sound of the true duals better.

How much is the GMMG catback?? You can get a true dual exhaust fabbed up for around $400, which goes all the way to the back of the car.
Ground clearance?? Ask 9t8z28 how much ground clearance he lost with his true dual setup, which is routed in the stock Y-pipe location. His answer will probably be none, because it doesn't need to go underneath anything. Same with the Bassani True Dual setup.
I've never heard a Y-pipe exhaust that sounds better than true duals. There's only so much you can do for sound and performance when you have all the exhaust gasses from both cylinder banks merging into one single pipe. I'll leave it at that.

I got the Bassani duals kit. $779 shipped. Easy to install, sounds great, no drone, and made a very noticeable performance improvement. VERY satisfied.

Bassani cost more than I really wanted to spend ($780), but I absolutely love the sound, look, and feel. Worth every penny to me.
I browsed LS1sounds for days. I was looking at the Flowmaster American Thunder catback sound first. The Flowmasters were going to cost me $325 and the y-pipe was going to run another $150. I wanted true duals, but no one around where I live could make me an over axle setup. I met mrr23 here running the Bassani setup and saw where it gained 15rwhp and several mph in the quarter over a catback. I figured the extra $300 for the extra HP gain and to get what I wanted worth it in the end.

it's all in a matter of preference. over the borla i had on the wife's car , it is much quieter inside the car. plus the 15 rwhp more i got from it.

I have TD's that some moron put on ( I was referred to him and would never again go to him). Flowmaster 1 chambers. I had clearence issues when I was lowered (intrax 1 1/2) but not now. As soon as I get my headers I am redoing the driver side and going with an X. But I think I'll just stop at turn downs don need anything over the axle.

might want to check local laws about where the exhaust can exit. some states require it to exit past the passenger compartment. so, dumped before axle might get you into trouble one day.

Unless you live in a small town like me where you can run open headers and cops won't even look twice

can you fit true duels under a car with SFC's? I'd consider doing it if I could get a set up for under 600 bucks.

Same here. My exhaust shop fabbed mine for 250 (he initially charged 400 however I was unhappy with his results so I got it for 250 after I told him to put my stock back on). Find a good shop they can probably do it for less than 600 just take pics of someone elses to show them how its done.
