It's apples and oranges....IMHO, the old ones told a much more interesting story and the special effects were amazing for their time. (I particularly like the potato asteroid...)
The newer ones slightly lacked substance relative to the previous 3, but I still found them exciting to watch, especially on the big screen.

I loved Star Wars.
Episode one was kind of stupid with the Jar-Jar Binks character, and episode 6 with the furball Ewoks, but other than that they were great!

Star Wars..great foundation. Prolly nothing wrong with this movie except something the first 3 movies suffered from, SHITTY fight scenes.
Empire..best sequel of its kind. Loved Yoda's teachings. Shitty fight scenes.
Return..still looks good! I love the starship battle at the end. Perfect wrap up from where they begun. Slightly less worse fight scene.
Phantom..boring for most of the movie. The BEST fight scene of the series.
Clones..Um, the kid playing Anakin is horrible. I know hes supposed to act like a crybaby, but this was too much. Yoda fought! Wowsers! Too short and his kung fu stance was gay.
Revenge..I expected it to be darker, but I blame that on Anakin's actor. Yoda vs. Emperor was a GREAT idea.
There was something love-able about the characters in the first 3 that lacked in the next three. Qui-Gon and Obi-Won were the only like-able (not love-able) characters. Actually, Palpatine was good too. If the acting wasnt so blocky, I would bet it would be 10x better.

the old ones are cinema history, at the time they were revolutionary. created a world never seen before in cinema and the story was good, too.
the new ones are so absorbed by logistics (special effects) and merchandise orientation that the story and characters get left behind. to me, lucas has become more of a cinematic manager than a director.

the older ones left enough with the lack of "super duper" special effects taht one could utilize and project thier own imagination... that is what made teh moveis good... now we are in a generation that await spectacular explosions and what not... we are left as sheep with no imagination...

I honestly didnt mind Jar Jar so much. I didnt like him, but he really didnt interfere with my judgement on the coming of vader.
I seriously think the acting was what ruined the newer movies, if at all. Luke grew into a Jedi a lot more realistically than Anakin did. Anakin looked like and spoke like he was 12 too much. Luke only acted like a kid in the first one, then matured more and more. Then you got Han Solo that was the doubtful independant in the movie. They didnt have a character like that in the newer movies. Less variety. Obi-One couldnt be TOO MUCH different than Anakin since he was his master. He should mirror Obi-One (is it one or won?).
Its silly to talk about it as they will never be re-made, but then again, they are supposedly re-doing HULK. Yep, I found it while looking for the new spiderman 3 trailer.
