Just a little food for thought the Roman Catholic church is the richest organization in the world. It may not be liquid assets BUT it has larges amounts of property and art work. In my opinion religion should not be a money making venture. It should be totally non profit and every cent donated should be put back into the churches, shelters, housing etc.
Not gonna debate, you are just putting god in a box like most do now of days. Alot of churches do put it into those things you speak of.

I must be the only agnostic in the world who is actually willing to say that most churches, and even organized religion in general do a lot more good for the world than not.

I even got kicked out of the local Atheists Club for saying that.

I like going to church. Don't go some Sundays and do go on other Sundays. Go or don't go without any spiritual debate and like to listen to the preacher. Sometimes he tells good stories and makes you think about things. Thinking is not a bad thing. No biggie...just wondering how many went...doesnt matter to me one way or the other. I don't confuse Church with beliefs in a supreme being anyway.

I will agree with this as most 'church goers' are lawful citizens.

So it does have a role in today’s society just not the same role as in the past say like during the crusades...

I'd love to think that it is accurate to say that most church goers are lawful citizens but I doubt that the inclusion of church into their life is going to necessarily be an indicator one way or another of their propensity to follow the law. This reminds me of that old saying "sweating like a whore in church"... I would say that you'd be smart to assume that there are quite a few people there looking for something more than to serve God, namely, redemption from their own actions.

As a side note - when I was younger I had a minister who I used to listen to give sermons in this small Presbyterian church. What Sarge said reminds me of him. He was one of those men you could tell wasn’t judging anyone and was really just there to help people. He would tell singular stories that made you laugh and think. Not like the hypocrites that seem so big on television now...

there are "atheists" clubs? Do they get church names like the first athiest, the roman athiest, or the the good agnostic?

Lord knows, if truth in advertising was truly the law of the land, many religious organizations would have to call themselves "The Church of the Ever Growing Bank Account".

I go regularly, usually once or twice a week anyway. I only recently started going again after not going for like 10 years or so.

The church I go to has a lot of money, and they give a whole lot of money away to start other churches or give to shelters or "less fortunate" folks.

I certainly don't think it's made me a worse person to go to church.

I never go. Mainly because Sunday is sleep in day for me. I also don't believe you have to go to church to be a good person or believe in god. I just try to be a good person and do right by people. I will say that at some point I'll start going to church because I have kids now and I want that to be a decision they make for themselves.
