Thermostat?
Hey guys, I just installed a K&N CAI on my car, and was wondering if I should get a 160* thermostat? I went to go purchase one yesterday, but the guy at auto zone said I didn't want that for my car.. I asked him why not, and he told me that my engine will actually run hotter by not letting the coolant cool down before cooling the engine.. He said it would be close to not running a thermostat at all... So I didn't buy it, and thought I would ask you guys first...

even though they have that wonderful 'performance' aisle, they aren't a performance store. i run the vinci 170* thermostat and housing. my car doesn't run hotter because of it.

Wow! That's a new one in the annals of misinformation. Kind of scary when you can't get good, basic guidance in an auto parts store.

Actually, he's not totally wrong though. Unless you modify the fans on/off settings there's really no sense in getting a 160 stat.

I agree, just leave it alone unless you plan on changing programming or adding switches.

Yea, I don't have a programmer to change the fans, so I guess i'll leave it alone until I get one.. Thnx alot for your input guys!!

Regardless, it wouldn't get hotter. Not sure what physical principle that's built on.

I thought the cooler t-stat just opens up sooner than the stocker. Therefore, keeping the engine cooler at a cooler temp.

Correct, after reading my reply again it could be taken as I was supporting what the parts guy was saying. Not at all. He was sorta right in telling you not to switch t-stats, just for the wrong reason. You need to adjust the fans to cool everything down, if not then it'll still run at the temps your fans let it get to now. It won't run hot, it'll run at the same temp it does now. Maybe at highway speeds it might run a little cooler but that's about it.
