Big Debate...which car to get?-GTO vs Camaro
I am currently shopping and researching LS1's and I am debating getting either a 98-02 camaro, or an 04 GTO (because their cheap)
I was only looking at camaro's because i like the looks and camaro's tend to be cheaper than firebirds.
but i just started looking at GTO's because there is one at the dealership i work at for $16,000. its got 15k miles on it, so that means it still has a warranty till next year. its a red M6 GTO
I personally dont care about the transmission type. i would prefer Automatic, just because i'm lazy, and im not very good at driving a stick.
i am leaning towards the camaro, because its a few thousand cheaper, but i would like that warranty for a year with the GTO. and its newer with less miles.
I would love your input about these cars, good or bad.

I say GTO. Dead sexy, sleeper to a point till you get it rumblin, and its hella cheap. I would go for 05 but hey, the 04 is still a bad ass.

Silver- 2000 Camaro SS
if i were u, dont just search for camaros. look for t/a's as well, cuz there are always really good deals on them out there cuz alot of people dontunderstand what they have, if u know what i mean.
for example, just for fun i did an autotrader search for camaros and trans ams (together), and searched only v8's, under 100,000 miles, years 93-97 and under $6000, and got like 8 trans ams/formulas in my area and 2 camaros....
so dont rule out the birds!
but personally i would do an fbody. theyre a dying breed. i see multiple gtos every day and i think they are ugly as hell! (although the interior is great and its good under the hood as well)

get Camaro, save up and then get the 09 camaro when it comes out
remember, the GTO WILL be slower but more comfortable

Arctic White Hardtop- '98 Formula M6
when i bought my formula, the dealer was like "ahh yes, the poor-mans camaro"
I would go for the GTO because less people have them.

well i am not ruling out the bird by any means, but i have been looking at them for a few months and they are always quite a bit more expensive, at least in my area. for some reason the camaro is cheaper than the bird for the same miles/condition/options.
i personally think the GTO looks bad ass from most angles. i just dont like the way they look from the side. but i LOVE the F-body.
its just that warranty im thinking about and the low miles

I think it has a lot to do if you plan on getting a new Camaro when it comes out ... If you plan on keeping it a long time ...GTO
If you plan on keeping it say 2-3 years Camaro or T/A....
T/A = better than Z28 but not SS IMO

another thing is that both cars are pretty rare in my area. but GTO's are harder to find than camaros because the GTO didnt come in a V6

Just buy both like I did.
If you do look at the 04 GTO check the passenger side front strut for rub marks. Very common. I've had strut rub and the locks mess up on mine. Locks got fixed under warranty and hopefully the strut rub got fixed by setting the camber as far positive and keeping it in spec. I haven't inspected my strut since the new tires and alignment last week.

i would love to buy both cars, but its not gonna happen. i'm gonna be financing the majority of the amount.
bout the camber being too negative... i think corvettes can have the same problem, i've seen that problem before, thanks for the heads up. (im a student mechanic at a dealership learning under the corvette specialist.)

1997 Grand Cherokee- 1999 Firebird.
A dealer here has a used GTO with 15k miles and the 6.0 motor for $29,900! WHAAAAT?

what do you mean WHAAAAAT? ?. Too low? Too high? 29 is way too much.
Heres an 05 six speed, with 15xxx miles.
For 23000 grand. That to me is an awesome deal.

09 EclipseGT 75 Chevy 4x4- 2001 Trans-Am 13 F-XT
Get an LS1 Camaro. lighter, faster and you can get parts cheaper. Just find the highest milage, cheapest one you can find and take a few grand extra on the loan to mod it up and make it reliable. Almost any used camaro will need brakes, shocks, tires, fluid changes, plugs, wires, motor vac'd, tranny mount, bushing and such. You can get lots of good used parts for cheap and have a very nice custom car that is better than the average one. Get good at buffing/polishing and you can even bring out a nice shine on a faded out looking paint job. The GTO is nice, but I don't really think they are worth the price in comparison to the f-body's. That one year is going to go fast anyway and you probaly won't break an 04 GTO until the warrenty is expired.

It's not really a negative camber issue. My alignment was almost dead nuts and the tire still rubbed. It's a design problem IMO. I'd be willing to bet a majority of the 04's have the problem but people don't know about it and wonder why they're going through tires so fast. Every car has it's own set of known issues, that just happens to be one that's common on the GTO's.
