the sooner you max out your 401k then you can go to outside companies/banks to invest money in a money market account. that's truely making all of your money work for you. MM usually have the highest intreest earned rates out there. you get more return on that money. however, w/your 401k, since it is pre-tax you can max out your contributions to it and know it's safe uptil 59 1/2 years of age.

How will I know when it's Maxed out?

well just so you guys know I am a guy, I dont work for any fn union and the union can go and fn kiss my a. im from Texas we don fn have unions.
