In an 02 ls1 SS 6spd what rpm do you shift at?
Hey guys I got my car dyno'ed and I see my max hp is at like 5500-5600rpms and I try to shift around there. I raced a z-28 with a catback and a lid while I've got a 335hp cme catback and I've added pace(lt's) w/ory and I've also got a lid. When me and this guy raced he pulled me really hard from a 65 roll and a 55 roll. The first time I down shifted to 3rd and the second time I went to 2nd. Does he have more mods than he's saying or do I need to shift differently as well as get a tune?
I want to know how to go 12.9 in the 1/4 too!Last edited by 7camaro7; 01-20-2007 at 06:15 PM. Reason: icon at the top

If the z28 was a coupe this is why he pulled on you if you both have similar mods. The verts are heavier.
12.9 is possible, but you will need to get your 60 foot below 2.0 seconds. Drag radials or ET streets. I wouldn't do many hard launches on the 10 bolt, it is the weak link once you have eliminated the tires from it.

You want to shift just past your HP peak. I usually shift at 56-5800rpm, even though the LS1 still pulls to redline.
But sometimes I do it by ear of by feel cause I've had the car for so long.Craig

I have my shift light set at 5800. From what data logging has showed me I actually shift at about 6000.
As far as weight, you wouldn't think that a couple hundered pounds makes a huge difference from a roll, but I have raced a friend numerous times. We are dead even. I only pull on him if he has a passenger, but it is only about a half of a car at most. We have swapped the passenger and it was them same for him, he pulled on me about the same distance.

guys this guy pulled on me really hard. I mean from a 65roll from 3rd he pulled like 2 cars to 100mph then from 55 and 2nd he pulled like 3 to 100mph! he was the only one in his car and I was the only one in mine. both 6spds and I think I was shifting too high for one thing. I was shifting like 6000 but when he shifted he was jumping out on me so obviously I wasn't shifting right whether it was too high or too low.
What do you guys think about shifting on peak torque? The only thing negative I see from it would be the needle falling too low after the shift into the next gear.
by the way I've got a shift light too and I've also got mine set to 5800rpms because peak is at like 5600 so I try to ride the peak hp out then shift. my shift like is my gtechproLast edited by 7camaro7; 01-21-2007 at 05:01 PM. Reason: I hit enter too soon

Are you sure he didnt downshift before the race started and just ride at high rpm until race started and just punch it, and you had to downshift and then go? Did he only pull on you in the very begining or did he continually pull away? if he only pulled on you in the begining then it is that he was already in the lower gear or he just has a better reaction time,(can downshift faster than you).

the first time he was in gear b4 me but I shifted real fast and he only got me by like 2. Next we went from 55 and I was in 2nd already but I must admit I didn't do it right because I hesitated as far as shifting to 3rd and I let out of 2nd a little, but every shift he jumped and kept a damn good pull on me. I'm going to talk to this guy maybe tonight. I found out I have a friend who knows who he is. He works at 10ac speed sport and I mean what do you expect, he works at a speed shop. And he says its all stock except for a lid and catback... I'm calling bs, the only advantage he should've had would've been him being ttop and me vert!

You would have to take it to the track to find what the car likes,,,changing your shift points up and see what happens.
But I agree with most here, from what I have seen, most everyone I have seen with stock LS1's have gotten their best times shifting at 6,000.
Mine is an auto, and after talking to a tuner that is going to tune the car in a few days, he always changes the full throttle shift points in the program to 6,100 or so. Seems to work the best from his experience.
As far as weight differences, I have owned and still own both types of cars including 2 verts at the moment, and I have had everything on a local scale. I don't see much difference in weight between hard top/soft top cars that I have had. The difference is minimal, not enough to make the outcome of your race that drastic. Probably something else going on he is not telling you.
We play possom all the time street racing, LOL. Larry.

I met the guy today and I got a little info out of him. remember how I suspected nitrous? Well today one of my friends texted me that the brawney man's(Dave's) engine blew when he was racing last night doing 140 against another z. I got a little info which resulted in a centerforce clutch and an ls1edit. I KNOW he's spraying. It sounded stock but he was reving faster than me.
for now I know he has a catback(so do i), a lid(so do i), ls1edit, and a centerforce clutch and I think spray!
Larry what were your best times stock on the verts and were they z's or SSs? tell me all the options on the cars and the weights. Thanks a lot man!

hmmm.....spray huh? Couldnt of been that much spray, but obviously he wasnt doing it right or his motor wouldnt of went. I was begining to wonder if maybe he had gears, that would give him a little more umph down low too.....go get ya some 4.10's for when he gets his car fixed and run em again.
