    small scratches

i've got small scratches on my left rear quarter panel. i was wondering what you guys use to take out scratches. they are surface scratches, nothing to deep. i was thinking about compounding them out but is compound needed for scratches that arent deep? lemme know what you guys think.
    thanks

i use the meguiars 3 stage kit. It has a swirl remover, a polish, and a liquid wax. I assume you are talking about clear coat only scratches. if you use the swirl remover MAKE SURE YOU WAX THE AREA YOU USE THEM ON. the swirl remover strips the wax off.

My car had alot of fine scratches and some swirls. I used some Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax. It works really good.

3M rubbing compound and my pro. high speed buffer is what i use to take out scratches.... after that use a lighter compound.... then a polishing compound....... then wax by hand

for bigger scratches use 1000 grit wet sand paper..... 2000 grit wet sandpaper.... heavier rubbing compound.... lighter rubbing compound..... polishing compound..... hand wax.... those steps in that order... you can use 800grit before 1000 just depends how long you want to work on it and how much you want to spend on supplies.

most cases for me a lighter compount and the high speed buffer is fine enough

Use the finest compound you can to remove the scratches. The rougher the compound, the more finish you remove trying to get the scratches out. Also, rough compounds have to be followed by progressively finer ones to get out the swirls they leave behind. Extra time spend with a fine compound that works can actually save extra steps and paint at the same time.

    Good luck

My paint and body guy asked me once, "you let yer wife drive the car"? I do let her drive it. She hits everything in the mall parking lot and at our kid's school. She bashes into everything and everyone. Birds poop on the car. My 3 yr old daughter picked up a rock in the driveway and started to draw a picture on the car. I let my kids help me wash it.
My paint and body guy sez I can come in for a quick base-coat...clear-coat in a few years.
