What would be empty calories?
I need to gain weight. I really don't know what is what as far as food goes. So my question is, how do I gain weight safely without fats or cholestoral?

Empty calories are unhealthy... a good example would be beer.

empty calories are calories taken in that have no nutritional value at all. soda, candy anything with the word junk food describing it. if you wanna gain weight take in more calories but from real food. also take in about 1 gram per pound of body weight of protein a day if ur looking to build muscle. dont forget to lift weights either.

Junk food! Here is an example of empty calories:
French fries, fried chicken, chips and all other deep-fried foods
A large order of fries from a fast food chain can contain up to 570 kcal with a whopping 30 g of total fat and 8 g of trans fat! Tons of calories from fat but little micro-nutrients.
Candy, pop and other sweetened packaged foods
A can of pop provides ~130 kcal as well as additives and colorings. Again lots of calories from sugar but no micro-nutrients.
Beer, wine and all other alcoholic beverages
A can of beer provides ~150 kcal from sugar and not much anything else. In addition, calories from alcohol tend to be stored as fat in the abdomen.
Refined grains such as crackers, cookies, white rice and white bread
Refined grains do provide some B vitamins, however that's it.

Protein and carbs are your best firend!
Continue to eat the same healthy foods you always eat, but simply eat more of them.Choose foods with a higher calorie density. You could eat broccoli and salad until your face hurts from chewing so much, but you still won't get enough calories.Eat plenty of starchy carbohydrates including whole grains & cereals, pasta, potatoes, yams, beans, rice and oatmeal. Don't be afraid of adding a little bit of fat. Keep your diet low in fat overall, but add in some of the healthy "good" fats (such as flax oil, olive oil, or a couple tablespoons of peanut butter) and you'll gain weight more quickly.Just because you're trying to gain weight doesn't mean you have a license to eat anything you want. Go for nutritional value as well as calorie density; avoid saturated fats, sugar and processed junk foods.If you can't seem to get enough calories from food, then a meal replacement or weight gainer supplement can make your life a lot easier. Adjust the serving size to fit your calorie needs and make sure the product has a good protein to carb ratio. Don't be afraid to drink a lot of your calories in the form of low fat/skim milk, juice or supplements/shakes.
