It has to be very smooth on the inside although sealing will probably take a bit of weatherstripping around the inside. On the other hand, given how hot it would get after a long ride, you could always use it as a portable griddle!

I actually think it looks silly... but I've never liked "shiny" stuff in/on my car. Just not my thing, I guess.

You aren't old enough to remember when cars were made of steel? When they had real chrome and stainless on them?? When the OEM's actually used stout material to build a car?

Oh, are we poking fun at age around here, FBJ?

Nah, I remember. I just think that chrome and "polished" stuff under the hood looks dumb. Chrome, especially since it's non-functional.

They mention in the ad that you should use a connector (of course they don't sell one) for sealing. Of course there is always duct tape!!

Honestly, I like the stock look of muscle cars (the metal bumpers, door handles, etc), but when I pop the hood and feel like I'm looking in a fun-house mirror maze, it's a real turn off.

    This is awesome:

    This... is not so awesome....

at that last one. The second one wouldn't be too bad if a couple of things weren't chrome, like the intake manifold. I like the polished look if it is not over done.

I was speaking of factory stuff, not all that aftermarket bling crap. I don't care for that either. Not only does it detract from the overall appearance of the car itself, but who the hell wants to keep all that junk clean and polished?? I sure don't.

I'm talking factory stuff where chrome valve covers and in some cases a chrome air cleaner lid, but that's about the extent of it under the hood. The outside is what I dig, and what I feel the new cars have missed for the last 25-30 years. Polished stainless trim and real chrome bumpers that actually withstood a mild bump Not all this plastic stuff you see nowadays that cracks when you look at it wrong.

What about the slp cold are mod that draws the air from under the car? I have one never used and was thinking about installing it today but I lowered the car and am afraid of this thing putting water into the intake/filter...

I have done the free mod on every Fbody i've ever owned and I think it adds a little snap to the acceleration, but nothing crazy. The free mods on our cars have been dyno proven to add around 10-15hp...but no more than that.

With that said, I dont drive my car in the rain so I dont have to worry about sucking air through the hole I cut in the radiator shroud below the intake.

Almost forgot...I think a black chrome/smoke job on that metal intake would look pretty amazing...

As long as you do not install the SLP CAI or water ramp as I call them the free air mod is ok to do. I live where it has more rain fall then any other part of the country and occasionally get caught in some down pours. I've had the air mod since I got the car and had zero issues.

Only negative is that I have to change my air filter out more frequently.

My car came with the free air mod already done... I got the SLP CAI for Christmas one year, but could not install it due to the hack job done by the previous owner on the free air mod.

    Best lid/airbox

I'm referring to that metal chute that slides in front of the radiator/condensor acts like a water ramp straight into your engine if you hit a deep puddle. Guys will tell you not to drive in the rain, easier said than done living along the Gulf Coast.

So did you fab up that intake yourself or did you find the elbows somewhere?

I've had the free RA mod done to all our 4th gens since the LS1's first came out, one with the SLP duct work. I never had an issue with water myself. Frankly I think where the issue lies is with people that go running through some puddled or pretty deep water at speeds that are probably too fast for puddled roads anyway, deep enough that the front air dam picks up the water and forces it up in front of the radiator. We are talking about at least 4" of water to reach our air dam at stock ride height. I simply don't drive through deep water like that, and if I do, I slow it down to a slow roll.

Then you toss in the fact that everyone wants to lower these cars to the point the air dam is only 1 or 2 inches off the ground. Now you start to see how the water issues starts to crop up. Doesn't take much of a puddle at all to scoop water.

It's these instances that really gave the free ram air mod a bad rap. You can take that information and apply it to your own car or draw your own conclusions and make a decision from there.
