build question
I wanna build my 07 impala ss now I wanna know what possibilities I have with the 5.3

You have a ton of possibilities with the 5.3!!
How crazy do you want to go? Do you have a budget?
If you answered, "fucking loco" and "no, I have too much money" ... then I'd say go forced induction. I'd vote for a nice supercharger set up. That way you have some time to get traction before all your power kicks in.
LS motors respond very well to anything that will help it breath. CAI, long tube headers, a nice exhaust and a tune will wake it up immensely. Then you can throw a mild cam in, hardened push rods and new springs and you'll have a completely different monster. Torque-steer on these cars, as you are probably well aware, is horrible, so keep that in mind when adding power.

I do want to go crazy with this but the thing is the transmission

It's always the transmission!! lol
There are a handful of places that upgrade those trannys, but the one I'm reading the most as in being the best is Triple Edge Performance. They go for around $1900 with core.

You can probably get away with just upgrading the parts that tend to fail, especially if you're not going to put a ton of power to it... but you might as well go big.

I want it to be a car that people don't realize what it can do until it's too late

The 5.3 is a strong running motor and it can be upgraded. I think that stock they will run in the 300 to 320 hp range and like any other engine they will respond to upgrades to the induction, exhaust and tune. Is yours a DOD engine?

Displacement on Demand (DOD). We have it on our 2007 Suburban that has a 5.3 engine. Under light load conditions, oil is diverted through a special lifter setup to deactivate 4 of the 8 cylinders. Not sure if GM employed this in its car engines, or not.
