Tune on a Stock LS2 - Worth it?
Just curious - I'm not one to do too many mods beyond maybe an intake and exhaust just for sound quality, so I was wondering if a tune would be worth it in terms of any potential hp gain and mpgs.
This car is already insanely fast by my standards and mpgs are obviously not my primary concern but if it's a decent bump for one or the other I might consider it. Thanks for the input!

Absolutely. If you were planning on doing any serious mods I'd say wait, but if all you are going to do is CAI and exhaust, by all means get it done. It's amazing how tame the tune is from GM, you'll for sure wake the car up by doing so.

Konigandy is spot on. Factory tunes are very tame. I've always found 3-4 tenths and 2-3 mph, as well as picking up 2-3 mpg with every LS engine I tuned, in stock form.

Awesome input, thanks for the help guys.
another question - if I decide to do some more significant mods down the line, a-la long tubes, heads, cam (would have to be pretty mild, though honestly I have a hard time imagining getting any gains worth the effort in an ls2 without a very aggressive profile that would impact daily drivability) would getting a re-tune be fairly simple or would it be essentially doing the whole thing over with every mod?
Thanks again!Last edited by sunseteffler; 05-29-2013 at 06:26 PM.

You'd be re-tuning... especially with a new cam profile. At that point, you should have the car professionally dyno tuned.

Silver & Blue- 02 Camaro SS, 04 GTO
Give your ride a good chassis dyno tune and you will not only see an increase in hp and tq but mpg as well. GM put a canned tune on every vehicle and there is a lot of room for improvement.
My ride is a 2002 Camaro SS SLP #3296 with 30k, LTH, 3" Y, CME, Frost tune, K&N, ported TB, Blackwing lid, Bellows, MSD, Denso Iridium, and 85mm MAF, Bilsteins, Eibach springs, SLP strut brace, Adj. Panhard, TA Girdle, UMI, Pro 5.0, Nitto NT555
My wife has a 2004 GTO with the rare SAP, 18" wheels, K&N Cold Air System, MSD, Ported TB, Frost tune, Denso Iridium, Flowmaster cat-back, 3200 Yank, 75k
