Shift lock
My '98 Z28 doesn't want to shift out if park this morning 32 degrees - it does not have traction control .... If I let the engine warm up it will shift out of park but have to depress button with both hands

sounds like there is oil or debris somewhere. when it gets cold, things like starters and shifters do not like to work like they should. once the engine has created heat, then all is well.
My daughter has a 2012 civic with 7000 miles and the starter does not want to engage when it is cold. been in the teens here in ok. i would look for oil build up or a bad switch.

Pretty sure there is a shift lock solenoid next to or around the shifter once you pull the console. Yours may be on the verge of going bad.

It has been a while since I had my console apart... can't remember how it is set up. Curious on this one to see what the problem is.

I don't recall either, but I know on many other vehicles this is the case. I've seen it several times before.

No motivation to take apart console....it's plenty warm today...maybe just maybe sometime I'll get tired of this problem enough to try and find culprit - thanks for the advice.

My friend used to have to take a small skinny screwdriver and push something to by-pass his. That was on an Escort. It would stop working in cold weather.

I have a difficult time when it gets cold too. Some times, repressing the brake pedal before you start to press the button on the shifter will fix it. There are times that I have to attempt this more than once to get it to work properly.
