My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
forged and bored VS bored stock block
I was reading a book about LS1's and how to get big power out of them and it got me thinking about making mine a big nasty car...
the book said you can bore a stock LS1 block from 3.898" to 4.125" but i'm skeptical since it's aluminum and those walls will become uber thin. Does it make more sense [for cost purposes] to bore a stock block that could have near 150k miles at the time of machineing, or should i just buy a new Iron block with the bigger holes? What are the benefits of iron vs aluminum? This book swung on the ls1's nuts but i thought iron was the way to go for big power?
Looking for street performance. Oh, and i dont' know what 4.125" pistons would put to the wheels with the right head/cams-figured it' would be huge, though! I'm a N/A guy-so no blowers or happy juice for me.
thanks for your replys

i dunno, reading that aritle, it looks like a lot of work for a little improvment. Didn't even clear 500 whp with a 4.1" bore and ported heads... I'm officially talking to myself now.

they need a better heads/cam on that 393... shit you can get the engine to 500hp NA with the 346 but the torque is going to be at or lower than what they pushed on the dyno

you cant bore a LS1 you have to re-sleeve them...i myself have been trying to find a solid forged rotating asembly ..stock cubes mind you ..LS1 then add some dart heads / ls6 intake / under drive pulleys my current cam and accessories..but not sure who offers the best package price..of if there is a core etc...sponsors? also i am in Georgia..

Check this place out, i know a guy who does a lot of business with these people and hasn’t had one complaint ever. back when i was looking at putting a 427 in my Trans-Am, they cut you a deal to where you gave them your LS1 block and they would ship you a NEW (not your old block) LS1 that had been bored and stroked at a discount… I don’t know if they still do that buy you might want to look around or somethin on there.
but if you want, like you said bragging rights, you might want to get a 502 like some guy posted in here a week or so back.. that's bragging rights..

In order to make an LS1 block a 427....you NEED to re-sleeve it. This gets very expensive.
LS2 402 is a good route. With great heads and a good sized cam...525+ RWHP is possible.
Hell...I have an LQ9 402ci with Patriot Stage III heads and I made 526 RWHP.
It really all depends how much money you can drop.2008 Trailblazer SS

You can get a stock cubed LS1 to make over 500 RWHP.
But it won't be streetable.
Huge cam, different pistons, higher compression (smaller chamber) heads. And the heads have to be really good ones.
N/A power is costly. My car has about $16K into it. This is everything though. Motor, wheels, tires, suspension, fueling, etc.

ick...i want it to be streetable, i really do. I was looking at that MTI site and they have some big packages putting out like 430whp on a dynojet....i don't know that gaining 120hp is worth 8grand though??
