Need answer ASAP!!!!! Verify the Reluctor Wheel on a 04LQ4
I need to move on this very quickly. I found a 04' LQ4. Need to know if that yr has a 24x or 58x Reluctor Wheel?
Can anyone tell me if my info is correct.

Just looked online. Should have the 24x wheel.

^^ Agree. Just bought a new book -- "Chevy LS Engine Buildups". Has quite a bit a few quips on the LQ4 truck engines and recommends them for swaps.

Yep,,,,24x just as mentioned. You can solidify your curiosity when you look at the engine. 24x wheel should have a black connector for the plug. 58x is grey.
As a matter of fact, my 6.0 is from a 2004 (same as yours),,,it's a 24x reluctor wheel.

I got it this morning. Picked it up for $320
hard to tell in the pic but it still has the cross hatching
I'm excited because LQ blocks are hard as hell to find in this area and to find a short block at that price Hell Yeah!!
I asked why and the yard owner said he ran out of room in his storage area for other blocks so he has his guys look for blocks that were not moving fast and discount them to get them out.
Now here is the icing on the cake. They miss marked it......$ it should have been $700 but because I brought in the print out of there listing from their web page the owner honored it. I kinda feel sorry for the person that listed it, I think they are going to get an ass chewing, but hey my gain.

pewter- 99 trans am
definitely lq4...dished pistons...from my knowledge, anything classified as lq4 will have 24x wheel...even 06-early 07's......the 99-00 have longer cranks........the 04-07 have ls2 rods and coated pistons...

I know this may sound stupid since I already did this build, but refresh my memory. Whats the difference between the lq4 and lq9?

everything else was either sold or pending to be sold. I'm happy to get this. They are almost unheard of around here. Finding one around here is kinda like finding a leprechaun riding a unicorn while hunting for pixie fairies.
They are just hard as hell to find.
LQ4 and LQ9 are Gen3 engines, not Gen4 (like the LS2, LS3, L76), due to the location of the cam sensor and knock sensors.
LQ4 debuted in 1999
Displacement is 6.0L
1999-2000 had iron heads
1999-2000 had a crank adapter to mate the LQ4 with the 4L80 trans (not LS1 compatible)
Compression ratio was 9.5:1
Block was Iron
In 2001 the LQ9 was introduced
Both the LQ4 and LQ9 shared the iron block and new 317 heads (similar as the 243, but with larger 76cc chambers), hence both are 6.0L
The LQ9 had 10.4:1 compression ratio, versus the LQ4's 9.5:1
No longer did either 6.0L require the crank adapter for the trans, now works with LSx applications.
In 2004/5 6.0L received improved rod design
In 2005 the LS2 block was introduced
It is essentially the LQ9 with an aluminum block
LQ9 still offer with an iron block.

Ah ok. I remember all that now. Mine was the LQ9 cause of the rods and pistons.
So Scott, how long now before its installed?

awhile....I got to finish the 8.8 build then immediately save up to send the tranny to Tick Performance for a Lv2 with Viper gear build. It's starting to give me some serious shifting problems (it has 159k miles) so I know it's time to get it a solid rebuild for what I want to do to it
Now that I got the block I can start seriously researching for parts and ask all the annoying questions from those that have LQ4/9's and try to start stocking parts for the build.
The guy that help me transport the block has a line on some LS2 pistons/heads from a 06 GTO that the guy has swapped out for a FI build. He was telling me that them combine with a LS3 intake and a good cam will really wake this baby up. I got to check it out but I'm not so sure of getting used pistons. Some things I'm comfortable on reusing like a block or heads, but critical items like springs/push rods/pistons I need someone that has more experience then me to check them out.
Future plans - I really want a 408 forged build, dream would be a FI build but that might be a long was off due to $$. My LS1 is running strong so as long as its not dead I have no time crunch.
Some of the immediate questions I have on this block are:
1. For now I'm looking at getting it to 10.4.1 compression - how? I know I need new pistons and heads but what kind?
2. What are the benefits of upping the compression besides little more HP?
3. Do all LSx style cams work in LQ blocks? or are their some better then others?
4. Is the oil pump on the LQ4 good? I ask because I have the 98 LS1 and they are know for OP problems.

Do not, I repeat do not reuse that oil pump. Buy a new one. But I believe from my build all LS oil pumps are universal. I bought the ls6 ported one.
I cleaned up my pistons and rods and reused them. Also done that on several of my mustangs over the years and never had any issue. Just a choice and budget decision.
I also know that with more compression my car sounds deeper tone. Louder. But there are other reasons I can't think of it.Last edited by jrbonds; 05-11-2012 at 01:13 PM.

The easiest way to get your compression up is with the heads (looks like you need a set anyway ) Both the LQ4 and LQ9 used the same heads with same CC combustion chamber,,,the difference in compression was the dished piston in the LQ4
The combustion chamber volume is listed as 71.06cc. A simple set of LS1 heads with 66.67cc chamber will bump the compression,,,,or LS6 heads with 64.45cc chambers is worth another 1/2 point.
Bumping compression as a general rule is worth about 3% more power for every point increase. You can see that number goes up expodentially with HP. 300HP engine 3% is worth 9 hp. On a 500HP engine it's worth 15 hp.
Depending on what you build, bumping your compression up a full point to 10.5:1 could be a substantial difference in the end result.

Nice buy, Scott. I have thought about hitting our boneyard for a 6.0 block to play with.

This makes the 2nd junk yard treasure I've found in the last 3 months. In Feb I found a LT1 in good condition for a friend. He's thinking of doing a stroker build for it.
