Light Pewter Metallic- 2001 Camaro SS
"Good news is you have an '06 that has the upgraded diff. My diff was replaced & upgraded to the newer '06/07 style due to a slight whine which is many times more common than catastrophic failure. Long story short, don't wheel hop the bloody thing, and it should last you."

1999 Formula WS6 M6-sold- 2001 Silverado Z71
There was kinda 3 separate problems with the CTS rear diff. The original 04 and 05 diffs were whining bad and sometimes completely failing in low mileage cars (abused or not). And these failures kept repeating and repeating leading to the CTS-V bad rearend rep. They also had issues with pinion seal leaks....which also leads to quick failures. It seems like the "upgraded" 06 and 07 takes care of those 2 problems.
The 3rd problem is wheel hop and abuse causes the gears to fail and case to split open (to be fair, I've seen Corvettes do that too but its much more rare.) Any 04 to 07 CTS-V is susceptible to that still because the diff just isn't strong enough (similar to the F-bodies). GM and other companies has fixes for the wheel hop and that'll help the rearend last ok unless its abused hard.

yea the rear on my car has been replaced twice. Once at 13,xxx miles and again at 26,xxx miles. I will admit the car does wheel hop pretty easily once you get the tires spinning. A lot of the guys on tech fix this issue with different axles or an anti wheel hop kit. Pretty sad these problems exist on a car that cost $55,000 new. And GM wonders why they have a bad rep.
