Is it real?
I read an article in Hotrod (I believe) that claimed they took what was believed to be a stock 5.3 (turned out to be a 4.6) and w/ an inexpensive, ebay twin turbo system, plus minimal upgrades the thing dynos @ over 1000hp. Does this sound accurate? Please, excuse my ignorance, (I saw another member make that request. lol)

To reach that level of HP on that small of a cubic inch motor you're going to have to run a lot of boost. With high amounts of psi you're going to have to run forged components. It's definitely possible, but it's definitely not the norm.
Just guessing, I would say that you would have to be somewhere in the 18-20lbs of boost range, which is a lot.
Minimal upgrades I think would be a big understatement. A car with that much power would be worthless on the street or strip without a ton of upgrades to the clutch, trans, entire drive train, tires, suspension, etc.

There is another thread about this on here. The engine made 60 passes on 27psi (1205 HP). No problems. The article is in GM High Performance I believe.

4.6? they confused a 5.3 with a ford ohc engine? sure it wasnt a 4.8? still basically the same as the 5.3

It was the 4.8L, which I believe is from a 2000 truck.

it's definitely possible......local guy here ran 18-20psi on a stock blocked LS2 for a long time using ebay turbo's. Problem is the turbo's themselves are piles of shit so plan on changing them out on a regular basis.
