Trap shooting
Just a quick questions. I am in a trap league and I use a rem 870 with a 28 inch barrel and a rem modified choke. Being that I use a 870 I know many people who have them and a friend of mine offered me some stocks he is trying to sell for very cheap and a couple were never even put on his gun. There are two that I might be interested in. One is just a pistol grip with a solid stock. The other is a pistol grip with the thumb hole. My question is do either of these grips create a disadvantage when shooting trap or doubles in terms or quickness and response time? Or is it all on the shooter and you should use whatever grip is comfortable to you? Thanks

True almost noone uses pistol grips during trap shooting. The gun will be used for more than just trap shooting but as I shoot 2-3 times a week it will be its main purpose. As for syntheic there are guns made for competition shooting that are synthetic. I think wood is just more common because it is the style around clubs like that.
There is 1 guy in the AAA group(the best shooters at the club) using a custom single shot 12 guage for trap only that has a very nice pistol grip with the thumb hole. But he is the only one and you dont need to be that quick for single trap.Last edited by Zinergy; 04-18-2011 at 12:12 PM.

I would say use what you are comfortable with. I never knock someone's setup, if it works for them. I've run into a lot of people, with unconventional setups, that can outshoot many people.

i don't know much about trap, but i do know that there is a lot that goes into the "proper" selection and "fitment" of the shotgun to the shooter. also, if you watch pro trap shooters, you'll see how their elbows are way out to the sides, almost horizontal - this add stability to their form, and the mechanics behind getting proper sight picture/alignment requires proper comb height, stock pitch, offset, etc. ...my guess would be that would be quite unnatural if using a pistol grip stock, and you wouldn't get the mechanics right w/out serious stock modification.

My average right now is about 16-20 on a windy day and 18-22 on a good day, my high this year is a 23. I will try out the pistol grip and see what happens to my average.
We shoot off of a cliff so on windy days those clays shoot up and down in an instant.
You can see the boxes in the back ground that launch straight at the cliff

I know a lot of places won't even let you compete with a pistol grip. Silverleaf in Guthrie, OK being one of those places. Maybe in some rule book somewhere, though I don't really understand the reasoning.
I went 23-25 with my dad out on the lease, no wind. Went 16-25 at Silverleaf, lots of wind, and the stations were interesting, and all very unique. Remington Sportsman-58, 28" barrel

This place isnt too strict. Its a very relaxed laid back gun club. I am suprised they are still able to serve beer.

It's really not unusual to run into guys shooting trap with pistol grips, you just don't see professionals doing it often. I assume that's mostly because the serious guys are as much about show as they are about performance. You can shoot well with anything that you practice with, I'm not one of the guys that claims there's ONE right setup and anything else is inferior.
I will tell you that trying with a pistol grip really screwed with my trigger pull shooting clays which I didn't expect because I have plenty of time with other weapons with a pistol grip. It just never felt right to me.
That range shooting off the cliff is freaking awesome!

I will be picking up he grip today. Might try it out today. The high is only 38 but i dont think its gonna rain.
The cliffs were not that close when the club opened in that location in the 70s. Those cliffs are made of mostly sandy clay and the cliffs are eroding pretty fast.

Be cool to have a camera set up there constantly recording for about 20 years. Then watch it in ultra fast forward and see the land fade away.

Yea it would be, all we have to go off of is pictures. But you can def see the difference. The club is trying to get a grant and permit to dig a trench 20 feet deep and put slate/ gravel in the ground to route the run off water to another part of the cliff. But its about a 50k job and without a grant there is no way the club can afford it.

why do you want a pistol grip? What purpose would it serve you? IMO that stuff is just for looks.....it won't help you and will most likely just slow you down.

I always liked the feel of those turkey grips with the tumbhole. The gun feels easier to move and control with the way my trigger hand puts more pressure into my shoulder. I thought i was a better shot mainly because the cheek rest is higher than on the factory stock which i think is personally to low.
Didnt get a chance to test anything last night as i was late getting to the club. But i shot a 21/23/18.

Have you tried getting a fitting from a gunsmith? Maybe the length of pull and/or drop is off on the gun you have. Seems that a pistol grip would put your wrist in a strange position. For trap it might not be so bad, I shoot more skeet and sportys though so maybe it's just me. Where abouts do you shoot ? I shoot at Winchester (I 94 in Franksville) and Bristol (Kenosha county)
