is getting full carbon fiber pannels worth it?
I totalled 4,400 for the carbon fiber hood, rear hatch, doors, front and rear finders, and the spoiler and i wanted to know if it would be worth it? I also had trouble finding the weight comparison between the two so if anyone could help...and also what kind of speed difference would i notice in a 02 z28 automatic?

Unless you plan on going to a full tube chassis, and total drag route, it is not worth it. The gain would be small.

I think for $4,400 you could get a new rear end, a good stall, set of heads and probably a cam. Then might have to give up some dough for a tune but it would be worth it.
Carbon fiber looks out of place on a nice American Muscle car such as the Z28.

A new rear end usually runs about $2500.

Ira your car and money. But leave that for ricers. American muscle cars are big and heavy. If you do that to American cars. Then is not a muscle car no more. Again. Is ur money and your car
I would build a nice motor with that. And probaly a good rear end .00 ss blk m6 " STOCK" strano springs, slp bilstein shocks, adj LCA, adj panhard bar, relocation brackets, 2 point SFCs welded,OEM zo6 rims black, magnaflow exhaust, CME exhaust,E/cutout, slp grille, custom front plate mount, HIDs, whistler mod, side moldings delete, slp air lid, ported and polished TB, strut tower brace, 3.73s gears, and some other parts to list!
next to come,4.10s,ls7 clutch, ms3 or 228r cam, ported 243s, ls6 intake, ls6 oil pump. ls2 timing chain, longtube headers no cats, with a tune..

i'll bite and say i am admittedly interested in what the outcome would be on this conversion. i personally would not do it, but like many have said it's your cash to do what you want with. i think it would be cool to swap all the panels then paint over it all in black and tape off flames over the carbon fiber. so that the car would be black and the flames would reveal the carbon fiber. maybe finishing them off with some airbrushing to give them depth. that way when people ask who did the carbon fiber flame job you can just smirk at them knowing the truth. curious to know what, if any weight savings it would provide.

I want to do a full conversion myself..
Pound for pound carbon fiber, or even a carbon/Kevlar hybrid is every bit as strong as steel.. Stronger is some ways..
But it goes without saying carbon is far lighter..
They do make air (craft) frames from it..
just my .02

if you could make an ls1 car weigh 3k or less with full interior, that would be amazing. i know there are race cars that are less but to have a fully streetable car that weighs that little would be great sleeper.

Stock hood is 47-59 lbs
Rear hatch and glass 75-80 lbs
front bumper 25 lbs ircc
rear bumper 23 lbs ircc
None of the below is CF just numbers..
VFN Sunoco hood 25 lbs shipped so 20 lbs on the car ?
VFN rear hatch 8 lbs shipped so 5lbs on the car ?
VFN doors with hatch 12 lbs shipped so 10 lbs on the car ?
With Just the hood and hatch you can save about 100 lbs.. That's worth all of a tenth. IMO you would have to call a place and find out about the CF weight and cost. Then you better be great at auto body repair to get it to fit well and look well. If not and you're paying for someone to do it you might want to add 1k or 2k in just fit, prep and paint. I can see going a CF hood. People forget you can paint them and still be lighter than all get out. I don't know if for street use I would do doors and hatch. I would think you would have to go to lexan for the windows. If someone can show me a CF hood, door's,hatch and bumpered car that looks go and fits well and retains factory glass I might do it. But I don't think that will save a lot of a weight... Now if the entire car from frame, inner structure, etc was all CF that would make a difference. I don't know if that could be done and the cost might let you buy 5 or 6 2010 or 2011 ZR1's...Last edited by Z28Thunder; 04-11-2011 at 04:05 PM.

I've also read that CF panels do not fit very well and a lot of fab work is required.
