should i buy this ss?
hi, i just want to get a few opinions before i decide, i had a guy stop me the other day bcause he saw me in my '01 ws6,he asked if i wanted to buy a rolling chassis just like my car so i went and looked at it (its at a repair shop) but its a lt1 body style formula so the guy obviously didnt know the differences between the years, body styles,ect..,so anyway while im there i see an ss camaro over in the corner of the lot and ask about it,he said the owner hit a curb or rail on the front end and it pushed the front wheels back torward the firewall, most of the damage is underneath the front end i think mostly to the k member, car has all the badges of an 35th ann. ss,all the entire body looked good including ss hood and spoiler except maybe the front bumper (i couldnt get around to the front end to confirm)has 10 spoke wheels, white face guages,ls1,t56,t-tops,the interior is rough from it sitting there a few years, the air bags did deploy,i contacted the owner and he will sell it to me for $1700,should i buy this and part it out? im going to take a much closer look at it in the next couple of days now that the owner says he'll sell it,thanks for any suggestions

The body panels are getting hard to find and the drivetrain is always an easy sell. If it turns over and the rest of the body looks ok, go for it.

offer him $1400
car seems to not have steering wheel controls.. is the interior leather?
is it a true SS or is it a z28 badged as an SS?
(i think its a true ss, otherwise the previous owner put a lot of shit into the car to make it like an SS for nothing) lol
Either way, if the rest of the car is fine, i'd say rebuild the front for sure.
like you said, you could always make even with the parts (if not better than even)

Honestly looks like a 98 Z28 tips and steering wheel. I should know I use to have a 98 Z28. Get the VIN# and run it.
Another way to tell is if the Mirrors are black or body colored.
Black = 98 & 99
00-02 = body colored mirrors.
Another one which may not be accurate is to see if it has EGR and a LS1 intake manifold vs. LS6 intake manifold (No EGR = 01,02 models)
10th digit will give you model year
Example: Tenth vehicle identification number digit tells the model year. 1988 (J), 1989 (K), 1990 (L), 1991 (M), 1992 (N), 1993 (P), 1994 (R), 1995 (S), 1996 (T), 199 7(V), 1998 (W), 1999 (X), 2000 (Y)------2001(1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3) etc.Last edited by Demon_Z28; 01-25-2011 at 10:34 PM.

yes it has leather interior,i think it might be a badged z28,the last three numbers in the vin are 228 but still not sure yet cause like you said if its a z28 he went all out to make it look like an ss its got all the ss badges, wheels, real hood, spoiler, etc. ill find out when i talk to the owner again

when i run the vin it says z28,it is a 98,i think the mirrors are black i didnt pay much attention to them when i looked at it,the egr was removed and the intake has some kinda round seal where the egr tube would have went through the front of the intake if was an ls1 so im guessing its an ls1 intake and he did the egr removal mod

well I'd offer him something lower if he was that inclined to saying yes.. worst he will say is No.
As long as the internals of the front end are good, then looks like you have a cheap fast toy on your hands
Either way, I love my z28. The SS is just a bragging "right" IMO.
Many others will disagree with me..
