check to make sure your plug wire hasn't melted from header contact... my other guess would be a lifter pooping out...

So as it turns out... it was an exhaust leak. The header bolts were tight, it was the gasket that had started to crap out! Had to unbolt the header and pull the gasket to figure it out... I'm just glad it wasn't anything internal. Good call cammed goat!
Hard one to diagnose given the sound actually decreased when rev's were above idle. Intuitively, I would have expected the noise to get louder. Perhaps the gasket would expand ever so slightly with head at revs.... I don't know.
