I just threw the blanket up as a cheaper alternative for at least a little protection. It still might not pass tech on a stick car, since they are made for automatic transmissions, but it might give you a little sympathy seeing as how you are at least making an attempt.
By far the blowproof is the way to go along with a block saver plate. Takes a bit to set them up correctly as well. I've never had one that didn't need offset dowels to center it with the crankshaft centerline. Usually no more than .006 runout is recommended.
The blanket however, you can toss on, strap it down and go. Take it back off too if you prefer.

You should take a good look at the Yella Terra LS1 Ultralite Steel Billet Flywheel.
I got it about a year ago from New Era Performance (they are site sponsor here) after they highly recommended this flywheel. This fly wheel is "bomb proof" with all the advantage's of less rotating weight (weight 8 lb less then the stock fly wheel) and the strength of a steel billet. I have it on my daily driver Z28 with 0 problem so far. Here is the link for it if you want to check it out: http://www.neweraperformanceparts.co...V=ytulflycam|0
Hope this help
