Kinda like ex-GFs. The memory is much better than the reality was.
Actually if you run them up to about 45-50 pounds and heat them up really well they'll stick pretty good if you know what you're doing...

Truth be told, my cousins (then new) 69 RS/SS 350/TH400 3.07 12 bolt could only muster a best of a high 14 (think 14.8x or thereabouts) in the quarter in stock form. And this was at sea level at Lion's Dragstrip. After he dropped another $3k (in 1970 dollars) into it it ran low 11's...

OTOH, a stock 302 would rev till roundabouts 7-8k rpm...

Car was in the mid 11s.

i was like what lol, is this true? possible?
Look at it this way: With a 4.04 bore and a 3.31 stroke the 340 could really sing in the upper octaves with the right tune, especially the 6-pack version. With 3.91 gears and a sure grip in the 8-3/4 high 13's were readily attainable for the "experienced" driver, even with stock dual exhaust.

Truth be known back in the day Chrysler and GM only had to worry about each other. Both made damn good engines with alot of HP for that time. The dart is a fairly light car concedering the years it was made, with the right set up I wouldn't doubt it could run that fast ,but if what the guy said is true or not is a different story. I know dad has a 69 dart swinger with a 340, dana posi trac rear, and a manuel trans. he also cut 2 sections of logging chain to bolt to the front of the engine and k frame to keep from snapping the engine mounts. yea he had work done to it,but I was little when it was done so I don't know what was done. I just know he tool it to the biggest Mopar nut I know to have it done.

    3-4 mpg FTW!

That's what my 67 with a built 427 and 4.11 gears got. It improved to 6 mpg when I went with a milder 454...

Semi trucks get better mpg's then that. Just think of the possibilities.

So the 429 big block is better than a 302 small block. Brilliant statement.

    Semi's don't run the quarter in 11.20 @ 120 mph either...

Fact is, most muscle cars ran about even with a poorly running LT1 - figure low 14s in the mid-high 90s. Rejet the carb with a high rise intake, long tube header, gears and slicks and those same cars were now low 13 second rockets! VERY FEW of the older cars saw anything quicker than mid 13s stock with a slick, and those were solid lifter big block cars.

Finally, a 70 340 Challenger with a purple cam and said other mods would be lucky to see low 12s.

All this being said, the 340 was a GREAT engine. One of MANY great american v8 engines ever made.
